I write from the campus of Brown University, where I am honored/excited to be studying executive and leadership coaching. And I was struck by homework that seems worth sharing. I am learning the importance of mind state and how "where we are" in life drives how we show up at work. In American business, we focus on product, process, profits without (enough) seeing, supporting, and spotlighting the very real humans who make it all possible. If there’s one element of being a spirited leader that I can’t emphasize enough it’s this: This work is a constant process of checking in, staying present, and aligning, aligning, aligning… I am currently in the midst of launching the Spirited Leadership Experience program. So this past week, that has looked like releasing my attachments to how I want the process to unfold, to allow something greater to come through… The work we create and put out into the world becomes so much more meaningful when we release our ego-driven attachments, and make space for new ideas, methods, and aligned action. Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions, and those of the people we interact with. Remember, it's not always about the number of meetings you schedule or emails you send. It's about the genuine connections you forge through these interactions. As leaders, our role is not just to direct but to inspire. By being empathetic, we create a culture of trust and openness, encouraging innovation and honesty.

I truly feel that empathy is the key to good leadership. Throughout my journey, I've seen how understanding and empathizing with the emotions of others may lead to tremendous bonds. Active listening is a practice that has had a significant impact on my leadership style. Taking the time to fully listen to someone, not just their words but also their emotions, fosters trust and rapport. Another issue near and dear to my heart is the promotion of a psychologically safe culture. When people feel secure to express themselves authentically, it fosters an environment conducive to invention and collaboration.
