Employee privacy in the digital age is a topic that is becoming increasingly important for businesses to address. With so much of our personal information now stored online, it's important for employers and inversely Human Resources Units/Departments to be mindful of the legal issues surrounding employee privacy. First and foremost, it's crucial for employers to have clear policies in place that outline what information will be collected from employees, how it will be used, and who will have access to it. By being transparent about these practices, employers can help build trust with their employees and avoid any potential legal issues. Additionally, employers need to be mindful of the various laws and regulations that govern employee privacy, such as the Nigerian Data Protection Act (NDPA). It's important for employers to stay up-to-date on these regulations and ensure that they are in compliance to avoid any potential legal repercussions. Ultimately, navigating legal issues surrounding employee privacy in the digital age comes down to open communication, clear policies, and a commitment to following the laws and regulations that govern employee privacy. By taking these steps, employers can help protect their employees' privacy rights while also ensuring that their business remains in compliance with the law. Productivity management systems dehumanize warehouse workers and push them to the edge of their physical capabilities. Low-wage employers use scheduling software that doesn’t account for workers’ schedule constraints or prevent demanding back-to-back assignments. Employers can monitor your off-duty activity with social listening software—and even feed this data into an algorithm to predict whether a job candidate will become a whistleblower. Right now, a worker’s only recourse if they don’t like an employer’s monitoring policy is to get another job. This is why we joined advocacy groups and researchers—including the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and UC Berkeley Labor Center—in calling on the California Privacy Protection Agency to leverage the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) to provide workers with the same data and privacy protections afforded to consumers under this law.
