However, it's crucial to empower women with the knowledge and tools to navigate this transition effectively. By understanding their bodies and having access to the right resources, women can make informed decisions that align with their needs, preferences, and values. The Lancet Series on menopause argues for an approach that goes beyond specific treatments to empower women with high-quality information, tools to support decision making, empathic clinical care, and workplace adjustments as needed. According to The North American Menopause Society, most women experience menopause between ages 40 and 58. But some start having symptoms earlier through Perimenopause. It was such an honor to host and moderate this valuable and needed discussion alongside Faustina Nevarez MD, Women's Health Medical Director AltaMed Health Services, and my colleague Deb Gonzales from our BSC Elevating Women and Generations Alliance ERGs. We discussed the effects that menopause has in our bodies, the treatments, and how to best prepare to be our own health advocates. A recent survey conducted by Korn Ferry and Vira Health survey (2023) found that 13% of women have quit their jobs due to their perimenopause/menopause symptoms. Of course organisations want to support their staff, but they often don't know how. On top of that, many individuals experiencing menopause may feel reluctant to discuss their symptoms with a line manager due to stigma or embarrassment. That's where Menopause Champions come in! In a survey of Canadian women, 1 in 2 respondents felt unprepared for menopause. A recent survey by IPSOS and Abbott highlighted that 91% of partners surveyed felt that more women need to talk about their menopausal experiences. Yet conversations around this topic are limited. Summary. Demographic change, driven by decades of low birth rates and increased longevity, is remaking labor markets and economies worldwide at an astonishing pace. That means that organizations need to quickly shift how they recruit and retain employees of all ages, including by developing new policies and benefits. Organizations that take employee well-being seriously realize early on that getting ahead of conditions like menopause reduces an incredible burden on their workforce and can improve the bottom line. The authors discuss why it’s critical for organizations to support employees in menopause — and highlight several that are doing so effectively.
