Definitely worth a read... The largest union of nurses in the U.S. —225,000 strong— is pushing back against AI and speaking loudly in doing so. Recently, their leadership was interviewed by FierceHealthcare. Article takeaways: 1. Safety and Equity Demands: National Nurses United (NNU) insists that AI tools in healthcare must be proven safe and equitable before use, advocating for the discontinuation of those that fail to meet these standards. 2. Nurses’ Judgment vs. AI: The union argues that nurses' clinical judgment often outperforms AI algorithms in patient care, emphasizing the need for human oversight. * Of note: The reported stats on "hand-offs," patient acuity, and ability to override the algorithm are surprising... 3. Transparency and Regulation: There is a strong call for transparent AI systems, including clear data usage and stringent regulatory oversight, similar to the precautionary principle. 4. Patient Care Quality: The NNU highlights concerns that AI implementation may reduce the quality of patient care by deskilling nurses and reducing the personal touch in healthcare. Transparency. Every day there is another article about AI in healthcare. Often there are many concerns about AI without user input. That is why I was happy to read the article in Becker's about Mayo Clinic, a health system leading in AI, who is working directly with their nursing staff on how to develop an AI developed documentation tool. "No decisions about patient care and workflow that involve the way nurses deliver their care to patients should be made without their input and without their direct involvement," Ms. Frederick said. "To be honest with you, it's not even a question of if they should be involved. The nurses' concern about AI comes from a place of misunderstanding. AI can never replace a human being's role in patient care. What AI can do is make a nurses' life easier, help reduce burnout, and help in the patient care workflow. Am not sure I agree with the way this is framed in the headline. More accurate is that nurses have a longstanding history of dealing with hospital administrators on staffing issues and they correctly understand how #AI is being sold to hospital administrators. It is not a distrust of AI but an awareness of the business incentives, who AI is built for, and what the outcomes or KPIs are.
