It’s been a few weeks since speaking with Mike Stack on his U of Michigan Wellness Paradox podcast. Since then I have had the pleasure of meeting new (& hearing from current) clinical & non-clinical professionals re: the Podcast/ Career, Healthcare, Well-being, Wellness & Lifestyle. In follow-up, a prominent MD recently suggested providers should want to share their health metrics with patients as a positive way of highlighting how they live their day is what they practice w/ their respective patients/clients. It’s a reasonable ask & to that extent, metabolic health is key to better healthspan (quality of life) & potentially lifespan (length of life). One lab that brings significant value to a comprehensive metabolic review is Insulin. Fasting insulin acts as a great early detection system of future chronic diseases such as T2D, CVD, Cancer, and Neuro-Degen. Despite its value with optimizing healthspan, fasting insulin is not currently a common measure of metabolic health in primary care. However, I am optimistic this lab among many more will become standard of care as momentum for preventative care and wellness continues to increase in the US! As a Sr. Healthcare Leader, Lifestyle Medicine Advocate & Practitioner who went through a 180 turnaround w/ their health 3.5yrs ago, I have always been focused on the wellbeing of the community be it bringing new services, building new facilities or more recently guiding community members to better health! In full transparency, below is my recent insulin lab result along with a major Lab provider such as Quest provides as reference range for high risk to optimal (low) risk where <18.4 uIU/mL is optimal. Of note, some experts focused in metabolic health suggest <5-7 uIU/mL is optimal for fasting insulin. In addition to my Insulin results, my fasting glucose was 86 and A1C was 5.2. This was my first insulin test and I’m very grateful for the partnership I have created with my PCP. He and I have great discussions and I’d we have learned from each other as well! Through my recent personal and professional journey, my purpose, mission, and passion as a Sr. Healthcare Executive, Practitioner, and Advocate has improved and transformed me as a person and as a leader.
