The Apple Vision Pro launched a couple of months back, early 2024. I was blown away by the level of immersion the Vision Pro provides. Looking through the headset, you see the natural world. With a turn of the dial, the world blacks out and you see a simulation. I attempt to describe the experience below. 1) Physical vs Virtual Reality: Wearing the device for nearly an hour made me realise how quickly one can get lost on an adventure. The transition between what we see, and what we see and experience with the Vision Pro is seamless. Being in our own Vision Pro 'space' (which is incredibly immersive) may lead to users donning the device rather than meeting in the physical world. The physical world starts to become a barrier to connection, it requires more effort and resources than putting on a headset. 2) Teaching in Science: Some laboratory procedures are conducted in highly contained areas. Only scientists with a high level of precision and awareness of lab procedures and safety skills can prepare a Biosafety Level (BSL)3 area, for instance, as required for COVID-19 experiments. The BSL-3 I worked in was small - three scientists together were pushing it. However, something like the Vision Pro can be donned by junior scientists providing them an almost real sense of being in the room, without the risk. Taking it further, if it were possible to integrate the technology into our 3M™️ Versaflo™️ we could view the experiment, pull up our protocol next to it, communicate with our team (extraction fans can be noisy), and keep in touch with our team outside of the containment chamber. 3) Multi-disciplinary Healthcare: If a patient has visited a variety of healthcare providers for disease management and is now being updated, the team of healthcare providers can share their reports in real-time with the patient. Results can be shown right in front of them.* Imagine looking at a bunch of medical files/printed medical results on a pinboard - except you each have a specialist describing these reports to you as you scan through the documents with them. 🎧Apple has recently introduced some exciting tech in their AirPod Pros. One of the new features is called “adaptive noise control” and it uses artificial intelligence to analyze both the music 🎶 you’re listening to and the sounds around you to determine what environmental noises need to be blocked and what should be let through. If you’re not listening to music or you’re listening at a low volume, you’ll still hear your surroundings clearly, but as you turn up the volume, the background noise from the room you’re in will fade out👌. 👀The other new feature is called “conversation awareness.” This is a separate feature from the adaptive noise control feature. This feature can detect when you start talking and will automatically lower the volume of the audio playing in your ears and will enhance the volume of the person you’re talking to 🗣️. Technological developments are accelerating towards integrating our surroundings with the virtual world. Apple Vision Pro glasses are strong evidence of this trend. The “object-oriented approach” can help us provide a unique communication mechanism that gives us the ability to combine our ideas, for the purpose of communicating, collaborating and discussing ideas in a hybrid world. Focusing on the objects around us, to design solutions and satisfy consumer desires, by facilitating the merging of our real world with the virtual. Early reviews by the only person I know who's demoed Vision Pro so far (my husband) are "unbelievable," "mind-boggling," and "nothing else like it in the world" are intriguing. It will be interesting over the next few years to see how spatial computing impacts the way we use technology, entertain ourselves, and communicate with one another. In 10 years, we'll probably see having a physical computer monitor as quaint and antiquated, much like the way having a landline phone is viewed now. Personally, I can endless applications for the way this can be used to experience the world including immersive concert experiences, explaining public infrastructure development to the public, and even day-to-day work life.
