The summer holidays are upon us. With it comes the increased pressure to make the most of these weeks with the kids at home. When it comes to making the most of your summer, you can do that without breaking the bank. This is what the team at Bigmore Associates has been talking about the last few days in the office. So we’ve put together some of our top tips and thoughts for how to navigate the next few weeks of the summer holiday balancing act.

If you’re retired, there’s good news in that you’ll probably live longer and perhaps better than your parents and grandparents did. If you had asked me 16 years ago what I thought I would be doing, career-wise, in 2024, I doubt that I would have said this. I started at Advantage Publications (Insights Inc.) as a Marketing Associate in 2008. I was less than 2 years out of college and this was my first "real job." I had no idea that financial wellness would become my calling -- I probably would have laughed at you, and maybe cried. I was 40k in credit card debt, accumulated for every wrong reason. I was convinced that I had already ruined my financial life. I had no idea financial trauma was a "thing," and financial therapy was in its infancy, thanks to trailblazers like Kristy Archuleta, Ph.D., LMFT, CFT-I(TM). I had no idea. Over 16 years, I have designed custom interactive slide calculators for: The Social Security Administration The FDIC The CFPB The US Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and Reserves CalPERS VOYA I bought the company in 2019. I own the copyrights and registrations for the products I designed and those I have brought into the present. I have come to and through a place of reckoning for my past spending decisions, and talked about this piece of my story, and will talk more. I believe that financial wellness saves lives. I believe that my materials help people come to a place of empowerment, of "I can do this, I can take the first step." I believe that financial wellness will play a large role in addressing the suicide epidemic among our nations' Veterans, without whom our national security would not exist. I believe that the next generation will seek out financial security and financial wellness in ways we are only starting to imagine -- online and in-person. It’s time to blow ageism out of the water. Love this post Maureen McCann People have so many skills to offer the world of work. With people living longer, we need to rethink work in the later years of life, especially with gig work becoming more prevalent. I would add once you have narrowed down your options, network, network, network. It will help you form relationships and connections with your desired field, give you an opportunity to talk with those in the field about pros and cons of the industry and make transitioning easier. Also think about what you want your work to look like. Full time, contract, part time or project based. For older workers, time and flexibility are often key. Hey LinkedIn folk, how old are you? Is making a lot of money something that's been important for you? What role does money play today in your life? Are you living your life today?  Are you planning for the future? Are you retired?  If you're retired, do you think you've made the right decisions? I want to hear your thoughts.

It is discouraging to see these types of stories when you have only been looking for a job for two months and you have not found a new opportunity, you question many things: your experience, skills, knowledge, etc. It doesn't matter how hard you've worked the past 35 years, the number of contacts in your network, your skills, the companies you've worked for, etc. In the end you don't know if it's just a matter of luck or knowing the right person, with a specific need, willing to hire you. Many trained professionals are in the same position and the competition is fierce. Ironic that as a technologist I am very disappointed in how dehumanized the recruiting process is; Because of all the AI technology that filters your profile, if you didn't write the keywords in your resume, no matter how good you are or how much experience you have, you receive an automatic email, sometimes minutes after applying, saying "After careful consideration, we are moving forward with candidates that more closely align to the requirements and qualifications of this role" #opentowork #Hiring #ProjectManagers #Informationtechnology #PMO

Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Andrew Bayly told The Post that a government-led review of KiwiSaver settings will commence later this year.   Reserve Bank of New Zealand data indicates that only 0.18% of the $97 billion in total value of KiwiSaver funds in New Zealand are currently invested in unlisted shares, well below retirement savings scheme providers in other jurisdictions.   Minster Bayly says that more money should be invested in “great New Zealand businesses” to help them both grow the New Zealand economy and people’s retirement savings.   In 2023, the Centre convened a technical working group to identify the key barriers to KiwiSaver providers investing in private assets. Among others, regulatory clarity was identified as one such barrier.
