The complex challenge of plastic pollution can only be addressed through coordinated action from all levels of society/organizations across the globe. This report highlights the efforts being made at various US departmental levels to combat plastic pollution. Bio-based products and packaging are exciting investment and consumer advocacy opportunities and they can now be high performance and produced at scale! Companies are creating packaging with strong natural fibres like #hemp, bamboo, coconut fibers or banana leaves, and other agriculture waste. Instead of fossil fuel chemicals innovators are using food waste, corn, sugar cane or sugar beets, etc. Packaging includes materials such as PLA, bio-PE, Bio-PET, PBA, cellophane or natural rubber. That means reducing waste and dispersion of microplastics which create #inflammation, #infertility and #cancers as well as use of valuable resources, fossil fuel dependency, greenhouse gas (#GHG) emissions, water use and release of toxins during manufacturing. PLUS we can actually recycle and achieve a #circulareconomy! If you're looking for investment opportunities look for new mono-materials and biopolymers, solutions that increase protection and transportation efficiency and products that present an easy and sustainable recycling process, and are degradable or re-usable. Also more sustainable labelling techniques (which eliminate the use of plastic sleeves); and digital watermarks or Near Field Communication for facilitating recycling processes. 🌱 A growing body of research shows that microplastic ends up not just in waterways but also on farmland. For instance, the particles flow into wastewater treatment plants and from there, wind up in sludge that treatment plants offer to farmers who spread it on their fields as fertilizer. ☣ 300,000 tons of microplastics end up on North American farmlands each year and agricultural soils are a hot spot of plastic contamination leading to crops absorbing chemicals such as cadmium, BPA and PFAS.
