Meet our GEAR UP New Mexico's Regional Coordinator, Katherin Hinton, M.S.Ed.! . What is your position, and what do you do with GEAR UP? I am a Regional Coordinator with GEAR UP New Mexico. One exciting aspect of my role is focusing on workforce development and career pathways programming in collaboration with our partner schools and a wide range of entities and initiatives across our great state. . What is unique about GEAR UP New Mexico? The beauty of GEAR UP New Mexico is its reach as a state grant. It is such a privilege to work within this special and unique grant model that allows us to serve whole school populations with college and career readiness programming. This inclusive model will enable us to impact nearly 7,000 students statewide yearly. At New Mexico GEAR UP schools, EVERYONE is a GEAR UP student! . What advice would you give a student or parent about college and career readiness? As a former college advisor, I have lots of points of advice. My most significant advice would be to engage often with the people around you who are in roles of guidance and support-- like your school counselors and GEAR UP Program Coordinators, as well as college recruiters, advisors, and financial aid specialists. All of these people want to hear from you. They want you to ask lots of questions. That's why their job exists. So don't be afraid to reach out and talk to them frequently about their college and career goals, needs, and next steps! . What is the best part of your job? What energizes you at work? Witnessing student joy and the broadening of horizons and possibilities for young people is probably one of the most energizing aspects of this work. . . . #GEARUPNewMexico #GetToKnowUs #GEARUP #GUNM #RegionalCoordinator #GEARUPworks #GUNMStaff

Please share with anybody you think might be interested in working for a great School District. Here are some benefits of this position! Flexible Schedule: These programs typically operate before and after school hours, allowing students to work around their class schedules. This flexibility is ideal for balancing work, studies, and personal commitments. No Weekends: Unlike many part-time jobs, Before and After Care positions are generally limited to weekdays. This means no weekend shifts, giving students the chance to relax, study, or engage in other activities during their free time. Relevant Experience for Future Educators: For students interested in pursuing a career in education, working in a Before and After Care setting provides valuable hands-on experience. From August 2020: I have to ask why I do not have a full-time teaching position yet, is it... -because there are quotas and districts must interview a percentage of candidates outside of the immediate area/district with no intent of hiring such individuals? -because hiring is based on budget not on the right candidate for the job: educated, experienced, and certified -because recruiting is not done, only hiring over the summer months hence little to no time for interviews, spouse notice at his/her employment, student record transfer, home search, moving, etc -because of my age? -because I am not originally from here or there? -because I did not graduate from the school district? -because I am not related to anyone in the district? -because of the amount of experience I have? -because of the number of certifications I have? -because I am a 2nd career educator? -because I am a parent? -because I care too much? -because I continue to seek out learning? -because I advocate for better? -because I grew up in central Troy (8th street)? -and because I believe in equity for all children? Why?

It’s great that the #SkillsFWD projects are addressing both the supply side (empowering workers with #SkillsBased learning and employment records and an ability to present those LERs for employment opportunities) and the demand side (employers adopting LERs into new #skillsbasedhiring systems and practices to find and hire the talent they need)!
🎉 We're thrilled to announce the addition of two new projects to our inaugural cohort of grantees! Based in Indiana and Pittsburgh, these projects are poised to revolutionize the landscape of skills-based hiring — Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning CAEL. 🔍 What’s in store? ▪ Indiana: Scaling a Statewide LER Ecosystem in Indiana to Advance Skills-Based Hiring and Economic Mobility for All Hoosiers ▪ CAEL: Pittsburgh Regional Upskilling Alliance’s LER Initiative ⭐ What Sets Them Apart? Both projects will target industries with high demand for skilled workers, utilizing advanced technology solutions to create comprehensive learning and employment record (LER) ecosystems. Together, we will bridge the gap between talent and employers to enhance economic opportunities by providing learners with end-to-end solutions from initial engagement to fulfilling employment. Join us in congratulating these trailblazing projects! 👏 https://lnkd.in/eqS2p4E8 #skillsbasedhiring #skillsfirst #lers #futureofwork

This resource is designed to provide parents with step-by-step guidance through the entire college application process, aiming to alleviate stress and empower families to make informed decisions as they embark on this important journey. When it comes to hiring teachers, there's often a tendency to prioritize professional experience, especially in high school settings. However, it's time to rethink our approach, particularly when it comes to elementary education. While seasoned high school educators bring valuable skills, the formative years of elementary schooling require a specialized touch. That's why it's crucial to take a different stance and prioritize hiring professional teachers with expertise in elementary education. By doing so, we can ensure that our youngest learners receive the tailored support and guidance they need to thrive academically and personally. Let's shift our focus to prioritize excellence in elementary education. #Education #ElementaryEducation #Hiring #Teachers #AcademicExcellence 📚
