What is so often missing when it comes to the subject of self-awareness? In my experience and in my opinion, knowing and understanding your very unique brain, your sensory, information processing, communication and intelligence preferences as well as knowing and understanding how to nourish and optimise your brain function is important for business and work performance as well as life in general. It's this part of getting to know and understanding your neuro-design and preferences that I rarely see mentioned or discussed. I think it is an essential part of exploring and developing solid self-awareness (along with undertaking other inner self work). Self awareness is the essential foundation of Emotional Intelligence - just like a foundation is needed for a well-built house. Following on from yesterday's post, this second part is to share more on the science of Heart Brain Coherence. In Part one of this post, I shared how in 1991, a scientific discovery published in the journal Neurocardiology put to rest any lingering doubt that the human heart is more than a pump. The Scientific summary of Heart-Brain Coherence Heart-Brain Coherence refers to the synchronisation between the heart's electrical activity and brainwaves, leading to a state of unity and balance within the body. This coherence is measured by Heart Rate Variability (HRV), which is associated with positive emotions, love, appreciation, and compassion. The Science Behind Heart-Brain Coherence Research from the HeartMath Institute has shown that the heart sends more signals to the brain than the brain sends to the heart, influencing emotional processing, cognitive function, and even decision-making. When the heart and brain are in coherence, the body experiences increased creativity, improved decision-making, greater clarity of thought, and reduced stress levels. The heart and brain communicate through the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary functions such as breathing, digestion, and heart rate. The heart generates its own electrical field, which is 60 times greater in amplitude than the electrical activity of the brain. This means that the heart's signals can influence the brain, and vice versa. The heart's rhythm patterns, known as heart rate variability (HRV), provide a window into the interplay between the heart and brain. HRV refers to the variation in time between successive heart beats and is an indicator of the adaptability of the autonomic nervous system. One of the first studies on heart and brain coherence was conducted by Dr. Rollin McCraty, Director of Research at the HeartMath Institute. McCraty and his team found that positive emotions, such as gratitude and appreciation, increase HRV and create a state of heart and brain coherence, while negative emotions, such as anger and frustration, decrease HRV and disrupt coherence. This research showed that the heart and brain are closely linked and that our emotional state affects the physiological functioning of the heart and brain. Conclusion The discovery of Heart-Brain Coherence offers a powerful tool for improving mental and emotional health. By understanding and harnessing this phenomenon, we can achieve greater balance, harmony, and well-being in our lives.
