Sharing the stage at a recent Raleigh Chamber Womens Leadership Conference panel with more than 1,100 people in attendance, I was reminded how powerful our personal stories are. Most professionals who know me today know my history as a multi-sport athlete. What they didn’t know was that history includes being a female quarterback on the football team, an experience that taught me so much about leadership and guides in my current role as a quarterback in the Architecture and Design Industry. When I shared that story, the audience erupted with applause. But more importantly, that story helped me connect and reconnect with people. After the panel, Sam Rapoport, another female quarterback, the NFL’s Senior Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion reached out as did the Chamber staff. My quarterback story was about learning about my strengths and how to build on them to lead, especially when you find yourself in the minority. This story reinforced my own feeling of belonging and highlighted the need to make sure that we embrace others who also belong at the table. A few takeaways from this event: When you share stories in ways that resonate with others’ experiences, important professional connections can follow. See yourself in a leadership role, even when you find yourself in the minority. I used my quarterback story to demonstrate how I learned to lead on my terms in a world very different from my own.. Envision more for yourself – I’m at the point where my early career dreams have come true. But Now what! Sharing with the community my aspiration to not only lead within my company but to make an impact as a community leader was empowering and impactful. And I appreciate that the community responded gave me the space to share my perspectives. That's what I love about Raleigh. Lastly, sharing the stage with Esperanza Harper, M.Arch, EDAC, NOMA, Six Sigma Green Belt, has enlivened our friendship that began more than a decade ago. #storysharing #womeninleadership #businessleadership #architecture

We're closing out Women's History Month by shining a spotlight on CP Skin Health's US Head of Professional Sales, Annie Diaz. When asked what advice she'd give to other aspiring leaders, she shared three tips: 1. Seek Opportunities for Visibility: Don't shy away from opportunities to showcase your talents and expertise. Volunteer for leadership roles, participate in professional development programs, and speak up in meetings. Visibility is essential for advancement. 2. Advocate for Yourself: Don't wait for others to recognize your potential. Advocate for yourself, express your career goals, and be proactive in seeking out advancement opportunities. Be assertive in negotiating for fair compensation and recognition. 3. Learn from Setbacks: Failure is a natural part of the leadership journey. Instead of letting setbacks discourage you, use them as learning experiences. Reflect on what went wrong, adapt, and move forward with renewed determination. Thanks for all you do, Annie! Check out the newest playbook — on building inclusive Board cultures — from Stanford VMware Women's Leadership Innovation Lab and the California Partners Project, where I serve as a Board member. The first step? Establishing inclusive norms. To avoid overlooking critical perspectives and groupthink, inclusive norms should and can be intentionally cultivated. From experience, this is as hard to do as it is vital. This includes everything from the structure of the room to enable everyone to feel empowered to speak up to actively promoting dissent. The goal is a culture where *all* Board members feel entitled to weigh in, share insights from their lived experiences without feeling tokenized, and express views that might be different from the mainstream's to ultimately improve the whole group's decision-making and effectiveness. Career goal ✅ At C3, we're shaking up the insurance industry by redefining the privately held insurance brokerage firm. Our 5 C’s - Care, Collaborate, Creative, Curious and Celebrate highlight our family first culture. In my new role as Executive Vice President of Client Services I will work to align our client services, vendors, processes, training and development across all departments and practice groups. I fell into insurance at a young age by accident. I was a military spouse, and it was the chance to have a career that allowed me to work the same hours during a time of possible deployment. In 2009 I became the first remote employee at an agency that allowed me to use our management system to create a fully remote work strategy. Fast forward through COVID, and C3 fearlessly opens the door to hiring and promoting remote leaders and team members all over the US. If you want a reliable job that lets you work from home, consider insurance. I’ve seen firsthand, and know dozens of women who agree, that an insurance career offers chances to grow professionally while also allowing you the work life balance to be leader, a wife, and a mother.
