📣 Significant progress for the carbon markets: Last week, the U.S. Departments of Treasury, Energy, and Agriculture, along with Biden's top climate and economic advisors, introduced principles to ensure carbon credits meet high standards for real emissions reductions. These guidelines aim to increase transparency, credibility, and accountability in carbon credits—an important step forward for carbon markets, which are essential to funding reforestation and other types of carbon removal necessary to mitigate climate change. At Mast, our post-wildfire reforestation projects are scientifically verified to ensure real carbon removal through a rigorous third-party verification process. We work closely with the landowner and local forestry groups to ensure the projects benefit the climate, the ecosystem, and the landowner. At this critical juncture in the climate crisis, quality carbon removal credits are a critical part of the solution. Read the full report: https://lnkd.in/eVuJQaJa

Some great insights from John Fargher, Jessica Loughland and Doug McNicholl in today's webinar, "The New Landscape of Profit-Opportunities from Corporate Sustainability". Thanks to AgriWebb for facilitating the event. It's interesting to hear about the pressures being echoed all along the supply chain, and the innovative steps being taken by progressive family businesses and some of the corporate industry leaders. Perhaps a followup session might include some commentary on policy frameworks needed to improve/support/promote the participation of primary producers in #carbon offsetting, insetting and anecdotal input regarding other on-farm sequestration ventures. #knowyourfootprint #regenerativeagriculture #carbonfarming #climateaction Clean Energy Regulator Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water Net Zero Economy Agency Climate Change Authority Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

As recognized this week in the first global stocktake, food production systems are increasingly vulnerable due to the adverse impacts of climate change. To keep the Paris Agreement temperature goal within reach, nature must be protected and restored. This includes an end to deforestation and forest degradation by 2030. Aware of this, last year the SBTi, with support from WWF, launched the world’s first framework for business in land-intensive sectors, such as food, agriculture and forestry, to set science-based targets that include land-related emissions and removals. The FLAG Science-Based Target-Setting Guidance was urgently needed. The land sector represents almost a quarter of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, making it the largest emitter after energy. But due to the absence of methods and data for land-related emissions, most of these were previously unaddressed in corporate emission targets.

In a revealing study, over half of the Colorado River's water is used for agriculture, primarily for livestock feed, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management amidst climate change. This research, crucial for ongoing negotiations on water allocation, underscores the importance of informed decisions in balancing agricultural needs with environmental preservation. Let's discuss how businesses and policymakers can drive sustainable practices. https://lnkd.in/geaxGpzD

How can investors help restore nature? 🤔 This was a central topic at Tuesday’s Brazilian Climate Forum. Our Co-Chief Investment Officer Eduardo Mufarej spoke on a panel with Ilona Szabó de Carvalho, Co-Founder and President of the Igarapé Institute. We think the case for investing in nature is clear. Agriculture, forestry and other land use account for 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions today, according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Natural climate solutions can deliver close to 7 gigatons of CO2 abatement per year, enough to achieve around one third of the 2030 net emissions reduction targets required by the Paris Agreement (McKinsey Sustainability). 🌍🔥Have you seen the USDA's 2024-2027 Climate Adaptation Plan? The USDA has unveiled its comprehensive plan to address the impacts of climate change on agriculture, forestry, and rural communities. The 2024-2027 Climate Adaptation Plan outlines strategic actions to build resilience and ensure sustainability in the face of escalating climate challenges. We’re excited to see the following key components included in the plan: 🔬Enhanced Climate Research: Investing in cutting-edge research to understand and mitigate the effects of climate change on crops, livestock, and ecosystems. 🌽Sustainable Agriculture Practices: Promoting conservation practices and innovative technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance carbon sequestration. 🌳Forest Resilience: Implementing strategies to manage and restore forests, reducing the risk of wildfires and protecting biodiversity. 🚰Water Management: Developing adaptive water management practices to ensure a reliable water supply for agriculture and communities. 🗣️Community Support: Providing resources and technical assistance to rural communities to help them adapt to climate-related risks. 🫱🏼🫲🏽Collaboration: Partnering with federal, state, local, and tribal governments, as well as private and non-profit sectors, to create a cohesive and effective response to climate change. 🌱 The USDA's plan emphasizes the importance of proactive adaptation measures to safeguard our food systems, natural resources, and rural economies. By integrating scientific research, innovative practices, and collaborative efforts, the USDA aims to create a resilient future for all. 📘 You can access USDA's 2024-2027 Climate Adaptation Plan here: https://lnkd.in/eqSKpx8q #ClimateAdaptation #SustainableAgriculture #USDA #ClimateAction

Oppose Anti-Environment/Climate Riders & Budget Caps Please join us in signing onto a letter urging Members of Congress to oppose the anti-environment and climate riders and egregious budget cuts in the Fiscal Year 2025 Commerce, Justice, and Science appropriations bill. The bill proposes a $676 million (11%) budget cut for NOAA which would hobble the agency’s ability to inform and prepare people and communities for weather patterns that climate change is making more unpredictable and extreme. The bill also includes harmful riders which would: • delay offshore wind development under the guise of marine mammal protection, while at the same time blocking funding to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales and Rice’s whales; • prohibit NOAA from studying the impacts of climate on fisheries, undermining the ability for U.S. fisheries to adapt to these impacts; and, • prevent any funds from being used to support the Executive Order ‘‘Tackling the Climate Crisis at Home and Abroad’’ (86 Fed. Reg. 7619) The deadline to sign is EOD Friday, July 19, and the letter will be sent to Members on the House Committee on Appropriations on Monday morning, July 22, ahead of the Rules Committee meeting. https://lnkd.in/g7beW5Qc

We believe that collaboration with the wider asset management industry is essential to delivering on our climate objectives, particularly when it comes to achieving our goals in relation to our Climate Watchlist of high-emissions companies. This year, we've continued to support CDP's Non-Disclosure Campaign by engaging with major companies who have failed to respond to it's climate change, forestry and water security questionnaires. We led engagement with six companies, two of who went on to submit climate data to CDP. Research by the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry and Clean Fuels Alliance America shows that for every five years of delay, we will have to eliminate 13 times the amount of emissions to have the same positive impact against climate change. Implementing low-carbon advanced biofuels in planes, trains, trucks, and more TODAY will have a greater positive impact than delaying action while waiting for future transportation technologies to become available or affordable. 🌲 Good quality FRM, planted in the right conditions and the right climate, can help ensure resilience of forests, and can thus help the EU achieve its sustainability, biodiversity and climate goals. Forest reproductive material (FRM) includes seeds, parts of trees (such as stem or leaf cuttings, explants, buds, layers, roots and scions) and planting stock (plants raised from seeds or parts of plants). 🔎 Dig deeper into the EU legislation in progress 👇 Herbert Dorfmann, Isabel Estrada Carvalhais Irène Tolleret, Martin Häusling, Bert-Jan Ruissen
