In the late summer of 2022, the MassBio leadership team was invited by Beacon Capital Properties to visit their redeveloped life sciences campus in Dorchester, Southline Boston, to talk about the prospect of MassBio opening and running a workforce training center in their building. Fast forward to January 8, 2024, and Bioversity’s doors opened for the first cohort of 18 students. Since then BioversityMA has graduated three cohorts and just started their fourth. They are meeting their mission of intentionally recruiting underrepresented and low-income students from Boston neighborhoods and surrounding communities. In the first class, 78% were Boston residents, 100% identified as either Black or Latino (or both); 56% were female, and the average age was 31. Bioversity is wrapping up six months, with a dramatic start and lots of room for growth. Earlier this week, I submitted my department's top three accomplishments for fiscal year 2023-24 to the City's Communications Office. Our amazing team put forward some solid nominations ensuring I'd have some hard decisions to make. That's not a complaint. The amazing work being done at Virginia Western Community College via its Biotechnology Career Studies Certificate Program was among our final considerations. However, that work, which is being led by Amy White, Heather Lindberg and Kristylea Ojeda, is simply too impactful and too important to distill into a single bullet point, so I’m highlighting it here. In early 2023, the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development approved the release of $15.9 million appropriated the state legislature for the Roanoke Biotech Project. These funds are being used to redevelop a surplus building owned by Carilion Clinic for wet and dry labs, and space for companies. The City provided a $1.9 million match to assist with various programmatic efforts that will bolster our ecosystem. Verge (Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance) and Virginia Western are spearheading these efforts, including creation of an innovation studio and expanded services to be offered by RAMP - Regional Accelerator and Mentoring Program. When then-City Manager Bob Cowell approved this match, he challenged our team to create pathways to help folks from underserved areas in our city to access this ecosystem. The Biotechnology Studies Career Certificate directly meets that challenge. No ecosystem can thrive without talent, and while economic developers spend a great deal of time and effort attracting it to our regions, developing a homegrown pipeline is even more valuable, not just for job creation, but for community pride and buy-in. That buy in is evident in the quote provided by Dr. White that wraps up the article: “We are thrilled to bring this type of real-world experience to our students and our College community,” said Amy White, Dean of STEM and Workforce Solutions at Virginia Western. “We are also so happy to be part of this collaborative and forward-thinking ecosystem, which includes partners such as the City of Roanoke, VERGE, the VT Corporate Research Center, Fralin Biomedical Research Institute and Carilion. The impact on our students is meaningful and may affect their long-term trajectory.” Happy Fourth of July, everyone! https://lnkd.in/ej6p44ks #roanokeva #biotech #biotechnology #virginiawestern #economicdevelopment #verge #talentpipeline

We continue to be impressed by the work at the Phoenix Bioscience Core (PBC). The first annual State of the PBC brought much-deserved attention to the innovators from Arizona State University, Northern Arizona University, the University of Arizona, the Arizona Board of Regents, and the City of Phoenix at the PBC. These collaborations have continued to bring world-renowned success focused on community investment, generating breakthrough research in Alzheimer’s, autism, and cancers. Additionally, Phoenix is dominating with a focus on the convergence of life sciences with our booming semiconductor industry. Companies such as TGen and IGC have spun out more than 26 additional companies, affirming the City’s positive investment in growing the bioscience sector. The PBC has nearly 2 million square feet of medical research and education buildings on the campus, with a projection for 6 million square feet at build-out. It’s no wonder the "trajectory of success" continues to skyrocket. The future is Phoenix. #InvestInPhoenix #PHXIsBio #TheFutureIsPHX City of Phoenix
