Is it true? Is everything bigger in Texas? I recently attended a MassChallenge event at Dallas’ Biotech+ Hub at Pegasus Park where they discussed the emerging trends, challenges and opportunities in the BioTech landscape. The collaboration of key players in the life sciences ecosystem across the state of Texas is impressive. I can only imagine how much the BioTech industry will grow in #Dallas over the next five to ten years. As a matter of fact, there are groups such as the Biotechnology and Healthcare Business Alliance of North Texas and Tech Fort Worth where industry leaders are partnering to ensure our workforce is trained, attract hobs and corporations. Government funded initiative like Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) and Bioworks for North Texas have strengthened Texas’ position. Better healthcare starts here: The University of Ottawa’s new Advanced Medical Research Centre (AMRC) will play a crucial role in curbing Ottawa’s biotech brain drain. Ottawa has earned its global reputation as a vibrant city for medical research and innovation. But if it wants to keep its top researchers in the region and build a thriving biotech sector, more lab space and private investment will be needed, says Jean-Simon Diallo, who is founder and CEO of Virica Biotech Inc, scientist at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, and associate professor at the uOttawa | Faculté de médecine | Faculty of Medicine. At the Advanced Medical Research Centre (AMRC), researchers, health-care professionals and investors will team up to accelerate the discovery and commercialization of life-saving therapies.  “The AMRC is a good example of the understanding that we need to get researchers to commercialize their intellectual property. We're keen to ensure future initiatives reflect the needs of all the players involved, and crucially helps more health innovations reach patients faster. 3/6 Increase 'access to finance' 💷 The easier and more attractive we make it for life science companies to start, scale and stay in the UK, the better chance we have of improving patients’ lives with new innovations and maintaining the UK’s leading role in life sciences. LifeArc was active in shaping the Mansion House compact agreed by the current Government. We'll work with the next Government – whoever they are – to ensure the Compact boosts UK companies. The life sciences industry needs to demonstrate its strengths as an attractive investment – an area where LifeArc Ventures plays a key role. 4/6 Maintain R&D tax credits, review them, maintain patent box 💡 These schemes make it less expensive to do life science research in the UK - especially for the small innovative companies we work with through LifeArc Ventures. Labour saying they'll prioritise life sciences in their review of credits - great to see, given life science SMEs are uniquely dependent on them for extensive periods of 'risky' R&D. 5/6 set out key technologies for the UK to lead, including (maybe) cell and gene therapies (CGT) 🔬 CGT is very exciting and we published on the skills the UK needs to keep them accelerating ( https://lnkd.in/enwaApjq ). It's important the next Government - whoever they are - keeps this sector growing. 6/6 Much more (regulation, planning reform, skills, NHS trials, trade strategy) 🏗 LifeArc is active in all these areas and look forward to sharing 25yrs+ expertise to help inform decisions to support UK life sciences and drive more innovative health research to patients.

“Smart” labels win prestigious Innovation Prize for Advanced Material Development's Chief Scientific Officer   A leading Surrey University academic and Chief Scientific Officer of Guildford based Advanced Material Development Ltd has been recognized at the UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowships Impact Awards at Manchester last week. At the event organised by the UKRI, the government’s public scientific funding body, Dr Izabela Jurewicz was announced winner of the Research and Innovation prize at the Future Leaders Fellowships Awards. These awards recognise the next wave of world-class leaders in academia and business. This innovative work with her research team at the University of Surrey, on behalf of one of AMD’s global packaging customers, brings improvements to vaccine safety and a reduction of vaccine wastage by offering a novel solution inspired by nature. The products are small stickers that adhere to vaccine vials that change colour if the vaccine is exposed to excessive heat rendering it inactive or even toxic.
