Kudos to our partners at the Ragon Institute of Mass General, MIT, and Harvard which recently celebrated the official opening of its new headquarters in Cambridge. The new building will support the Institute’s research to harness the power of the human immune system to prevent and cure disease. It continues to be a privilege to partner on and support the Ragon Institute Summer Experience (RISE) internship program which engages high school and undergraduate students underrepresented in medical research who are interested in learning about immunology and related fields. Recently, I presented on the effect of exogenous substances on tissue quality and remedies to avoid the production of poor quality slides, one of the four seminar presentations required for my one year internship program in FEDERAL MEDICAL CENTER, OWO, ONDO STATE. Exploring the effects of exogenous substances on tissue quality is crucial in understanding how our environment and external factors can influence histological samples. By discussing remedies to prevent poor quality slides in histopathology, we enhance the accuracy of diagnostic procedures and research findings, ultimately improving patient care and scientific advancements in the medical field.

Hello! I'm excited to share that I've concluded my 10-week internship at Vanderbilt University's Department of Biomedical Informatics. Looking back, it seems like the summer passed so quickly—yet I have learned so much from so many people. I want to thank Kim Unertl & Rischelle Jenkins for organizing this program and Brad Malin, Nicholas Jackson, & Victor Borza for their valuable mentorship this summer! Also, a special shoutout to my fellow interns for making the summer heat of Nashville not only bearable but enjoyable! If you're interested, here's a very, very, very, quick summary of my project this summer. THE PROJECT: Fairness in Dermatology Image Classification In the field of dermatology, physicians perform better on certain skin tones compared to others. Machine learning models also perform better on certain skin tones than others, which may be caused by imbalanced training data. We hypothesized that balancing our data with oversampling techniques and synthetic GAN-generated images would improve performance disparities across skin tones. I built a code framework to train/fine-tune CNN models and evaluate their performance/fairness on test sets (check the GitHub repo in my profile). Turns out that augmenting our training data with synthetic images may increase model performance while maintaining or even improving fairness. Very cool stuff! Reach out with questions!

🔬 Reflecting on my Internship at MOMA: Bridging clinical diagnostics and Innovation! 🌐 I am thrilled about my internship at Dept. of Molecular Medicine, Aarhus University Hospital (MOMA). This fall, I worked with assignments shaping the forefront of molecular diagnostics: 🖥️ Tech Evolution in Healthcare: I have explored variant interpretation tools, researched AI-integrated solutions for efficient variant interpretation - highlighting the need for tech advancements. This has helped me feel more ready for working closely with AI, which is becoming increasingly relevant in the workplace. 🧬 Polygenic Risk Scores in Focus: I have explored the feasibility of incorporating PRS for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. A statistical journey through SNPs and risk assessments paved the way for implementing PRS at MOMA. Though promising, it posed challenges, and is not yet ready for clinical use. 💼 Workplace Dynamics: MOMA's vibrant culture fostered collaboration and knowledge sharing, creating a sense of belonging among a diverse group of colleagues. 🔑 Key Takeaways: Efficient task management, improved communication skills, profound insights into molecular medicine, real-world problem-solving, and critical thinking. Grateful for this transformative experience! Thank you very much to the department and my colleagues that have welcomed, supported, and empowered me through these great experiences! #InternshipJourney #Praktik #Diplomingeniør #MolecularDiagnostics #InnovationInHealthcare👩🔬

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Professional | Counselor at Law | Certified Mediator | Supplier Diversity
Congratulations to Zoey Hall! ”After I graduate, I plan to get my PhD in either data science or biostatistics, in order to become a data scientist who works on clinical studies related to Black maternal health. Before this internship I was strictly looking for data science programs because I didn’t realize how close biostatistics was to data science, and how biostatistics actually goes more in depth and is used to address more questions related to the biological and health science field. Ultimately, I want to be able to analyze chaos data collected in trials or treatments, targeted for Black maternal health, with the goal of passing it on to legislators and policymakers who can use it to make informed and impactful decisions towards correcting the Black maternal health crisis.” —————————————————————————————————————— POSTER’S NOTE: Congress alone has the power to make new laws and revise existing law. Voters can intentionally vote for congressional representatives who embrace collaborating with diverse experts to make and revise laws that positively impact the diverse population that constitutes the U.S.—a population that includes historically and persistently marginalized persons. Choose representatives wisely. Research them. Perhaps view them through the lens of progress over perfection.
#InternshipSpotlight: Through the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Diversity Summer Internship Program for Undergraduates, Zoey Hall is interning with the Johns Hopkins Department of Biostatistics this summer, working on research related to the Boston Birth Study Cohort.
