Veterinarians! Deans, faculty, adjuncts! Students! Animal welfare advocates! I encourage you to thoughtfully engage with this material. Animal Rights Law and Policy is not a (are not) dirty word(s)! Nor is it a single behemoth, yes or no, all or nothing dichotomy. Society is evolving at a speedy pace to create a just and humane existence for animals, and WE (veterinarians) are not the drivers of the change - the lawyers are! Don’t be lazy with reductionist thinking & dismiss the conversation as “PETA.” Dismayingly, we are - in many ways - the impediments to progress. We can join the animal rights conversation in a productive & relevant ways by being informed and current. Or we can 🙈🙉🙊 and be left behind, irrelevant and left out of the evolution. Me? I want to be in the thick of it!

🆘 BREAKING: Threat to nation's strongest farm animal law deepens in US Congress! * Remember, regulatory management of ANY ANIMAL commercially BRED FOR VARIOUS PURPOSES may come under the umbrella of the USDA, and MAY BE SUBJECT TO REGULATORY GUIDELINES, OR THE LACK OF CLEAR GUIDELINES, IN THE FARM BILL. This can include animals farmed for food, fur, testing, for medical use and animal sport industries, animal companions and even wildlife captured and comercially bred for human purposes. “The purpose of the EATS Act and related initiatives under discussion in Congress is to nullify the autonomy of state and local governments to determine what kinds of products can be sold in their markets. The EATS Act would compel state and local governments to accept products from other states that violate local moral standards and health regulations, contrary to the nation’s founding principle of federalism.” This is a HUGE threat to animal protections and their wellbeing! “And yet, lobbyists from big agribusiness are now trying to gut California’s landmark law concerning public health and animal welfare, and to nullify the Supreme Court decision.
