“It’s the most significant thing to happen in our industry for decades.” Our expert panel of Hannah Mansell from Masonite (UK), Georgina Williams, PhD from Hydrock and Steve McGuirk CBE.QFSM.DL from Fire Sector Federation discussed the impact of the #BuildingSafetyAct on the #construction sector at yesterday’s Premdor Unlocked event in Manchester. Chaired by David Smalley, at the Material Source studio, it covered a range of themes including: - the impact of the Act on the sector’s culture - and where there’s more work to do. - the importance of engagement at every link in the chain, from building design through to construction, handover and maintenance (including resident engagement) - the mindset change required to drive responsibility and accountability for the long term - the need to allow space for innovation, and not just a focus on minimum standards and regulation - driving competence throughout the full supply chain and taking a systems based approach to projects The panel also discussed the potential findings of the Grenfell Inquiry report, due 4th September, commenting that they expect it to be “comprehensive” and “include some surprises.” Watch this space for a full write up of the event to follow.
