Juneteenth for many in our country is a day of celebration, marking the at least symbolic end of slavery in the United States on June 19th, 1865. It is an important celebration that should be honored by all, particularly as many would want to erase part of our history. Given that this day was over 2 months after Lee's surrender at Appomattox, almost 3 years after the Emancipation Proclamation (which only applied to areas occupied by Confederate forces), and a month after the disbanding of the Confederate military department in Texas (not to mention after the ratification of the United States Constitution decades earlier), Juneteenth can very possibly be an example of the Rev. Dr. King's statement that "justice too long delayed is justice denied." I believe those of us who identify as white and continue to enjoy the privileges our culture extends with that, we must be mindful of the ongoing work we each need to do both internally, in our families, our communities, our places of employment, in our civic engagements, our faith communities, and any other sector of our lives as we move toward equity and inclusion for all persons. For many of us, we must be careful not to think a celebration absolves us from the work that still needs to be done. Christians aren’t getting enough heat for what is happening in Pal-ine. There are more Christian Zi*onists in the United States alone than there are Jews in the entire world, and it is directly because of Christian Zio*nism that Izrael has the kind of military, political, and social power that it has. Jewish Zio.nism without Christian Zio.nists would just be a fringe extremist movement without any systemic power. White Christianity is responsible for countless atrocities throughout history, where they used a bastardized version of their faith to justify chattel slavery, gen-o-cide, rape, destruction of the lands they came across, and so much else. Christians: you have a direct responsibility to push back against the extremism in your community and to dismantle the systems of oppression that your ancestors put into place and which you still benefit from today. And I expect to see you making A LOT more noise about Pal-ine.

America's Revolutionary War was more than a conflict to end British rule and create the USA. It was also a civil war, fracturing communities and families throughout North America and across the Atlantic. My article for TheCollector examines the 1777 Battle of Oriskany, which many historians believe is proportionately one of the war's bloodiest. It argues that Oriskany was more than a battle in the civil war between Patriots and Loyalists. Oriskany also marked a violent rupture within the Iroquois Confederacy. Today marks the anniversary of the heroic D-Day, a momentous event that forever altered the course of history. As we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for freedom, it is both reflective and deeply concerning to witness - after 80 years - the same human cruelty displayed by Nazism reemerging in various forms, just with different victims, suggesting us that the "banality of evil" (Arendt) has returned. Or worse, maybe we never got rid of it! Moreover, the growing tensions and preparations for potential conflicts in Europe echo the ominous drums of past world wars. Does history truly teach us nothing? Their story shaped ours!
