On Day 3 of the INDIA-MALAYSIA INTERNATIONAL IMMERSION AND INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME 2023 (7th-13th October), I delved into Malaysia's vibrant industrial landscape, exploring key hubs and institutions that drive innovation and economic progress. I explored Malaysia's industrial scene, including Kulim High-Tech Park (KHTP), a government-supported hub fostering innovation and economic growth. The emphasis on sustainability at KHTP reflects its commitment to responsible industrial growth. I also visited the Cooperative Commission and gained insights into how cooperatives empower members. Additionally, the Malaysian Institute of Microelectronic Systems (MIMOS) showcased groundbreaking research, with a focus on Industry 4.0 and semiconductor technology. These experiences deepened my understanding of Malaysia's industrial landscape and its role in driving innovation and economic progress. Welcome to the RMI Spotlight Kevin Ton ⭐ This series features our current and former students involved with the Research Mentoring Internship (RMI) Program. Today we are catching up with Kevin Ton! ⭐ Can you briefly describe your experience with RMI? And what did you gain from participating in the program? My experience with RMI started out rocky since I was really struggling to get into a lab and overall finding time to be more involved with the program. However, after I joined a lab all thanks to RMI for putting in a good word for me, which makes me stand out from other applicants; I really don’t think I could’ve joined a lab without being an RMI scholar. ⭐ What was your favorite memory in your RMI cohort? My favorite memory of my RMI cohort was the slow and steady relationship-building with everyone. I remember the first meeting being awkward and later gradually becoming friends and close acquaintances with one another in future meetings. ⭐ Now that you have graduated from RMI, can you tell us about your next steps? My next step is to take a year off to get some work experience in the biotech industry since I’ve only had an academic experience so far and plan my next step in applying to grad school.

I had the privilege of participating in the recent Big Industry Challenge (BIC) at RMIT University, where we had the exciting opportunity to engage with Intelligent Water Networks. 🌊 Our micro-internship was an incredible journey of connection and learning, bringing together a diverse group of individuals to envision solutions for a sustainable future. One astonishing fact that caught my attention: each person wastes approximately 10 litres of water every day. 🚱 The potential for savings through responsible water usage is staggering. Our exploration into tracking and monitoring water usage revealed the power of informed decision-making in fostering a more responsible society. Collaborating with an awesome team, we worked towards a common goal of achieving a circular economy. The process of conceptualizing a problem statement and working towards solutions was both enlightening and rewarding. 🌍 This experience highlighted the crucial role of awareness in fostering a circular economy, especially in the context of sustainability. It was eye-opening to see how much our daily actions impact the environment and how informed decisions can make a significant difference. A big thank you to RMIT University for organizing such an impactful event! 🙌 Looking forward to more opportunities to engage in meaningful projects and contribute to a sustainable future.
