There are some standout performances from the #USA at the #Paralympics like #DanielRomanchuk's clutch finish in the Men's 5000m T54 but why is the strongest #Olympic team left far in the wake of teams like #China & the #UK? Paralympics in the #US have historically received less #attention, #funding, and institutional #support. While there have been improvements in recent years, the US Paralympic movement still faces challenges regarding #visibility and #resource allocation. The relative lack of #investment & #promotion of Paralympic sports compared to their Olympic counterparts means fewer #athletes with disabilities have access to the same training, facilities, and competitive opportunities. This disparity contributes to not performing as strongly, as the #infrastructure and #cultural emphasis that benefits #Olympic athletes are not as robustly extended to Paralympic sports. I am not sure if this position is also a symptom of a greater societal issue in terms of supporting people with disabilities or even one of a sports ecosystem which prioritises profit. India has won a record breaking score of 29 medals at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. 7 of those are gold! How? The government boosted its investment in Paralympics since Tokyo to Rs. 20 crores in 2024. Apart from that, the strength of coaches was also scaled from 45 in Tokyo to 77 in Paris. Nevertheless, Paralympics have traditionally been underfunded in comparison to Olympics. This year’s spectacular performance has helped Indian Paralympics gain the much needed traction. This gives hope for more investment for 2028 Paralympics. Questioning the Disparity Between the Olympics and Paralympics? As a volunteer for both the Olympics and Paralympics, I've had the rare chance to see the inner workings of both events up close.  It’s troubling to witness the stark difference in budgets, services, and overall investment between the two, with the Paralympics receiving? less. Paralympic athletes have overcome tremendous challenges, surpassing physical and societal barriers to excel at the highest level of their sports. Despite these extraordinary accomplishments, the resources devoted to the Paralympics are not on the same scale as what is allocated to the Olympics. Why do those who have had to overcome so much receive so much less in return?  Shouldn't the Paralympics be supported and celebrated just as much, if not more, for the determination, resilience, and skill these athletes  display? Should we accept the Paralympics as a lesser counterpart to the Olympics simply because the investment is not on the same level? What is in a word? PARA "παρά" (para), is derived from a Greek preposition. It was adopted by the Paralympic movement to signify "attached to" or "parallel to" the Olympics (Bailey, 2008). This distinction is important as it addresses the misconception that Elite athletes with disabilities [yes ELITE!!!] primary goal is participation and winning from the competition is an added benefit. For the benefit of everyone, the Paralympics are not any less exciting or of a lower level of competition. Don't take my word for it, tune in and watch for yourself. Years of effort, mastery of skill and competitive edge culminate in these athletes demonstrating their abilities for the world to enjoy and celebrate.
