What is in a word? PARA "παρά" (para), is derived from a Greek preposition. It was adopted by the Paralympic movement to signify "attached to" or "parallel to" the Olympics (Bailey, 2008). This distinction is important as it addresses the misconception that Elite athletes with disabilities [yes ELITE!!!] primary goal is participation and winning from the competition is an added benefit. For the benefit of everyone, the Paralympics are not any less exciting or of a lower level of competition. Don't take my word for it, tune in and watch for yourself. Years of effort, mastery of skill and competitive edge culminate in these athletes demonstrating their abilities for the world to enjoy and celebrate. The Olympics and Paralympics are just around the corner. The main talk naturally is around how many medals India can win. One topic which often surfaces but should be completely avoided is comparisons between the Olympic and Paralympic medal tally of India. Not at all a fair comparison for many reasons. The progress markers for India to improve are the respective performances from Tokyo 2020. India won 7 (1 Gold) medals at the Olympics and 19 (5 Gold) medals at the Paralympics. Two real possibilities for Paris 2024 which I am super excited about are 1. India’s first female Olympic Gold medalist ! 2. Gold, Silver, Bronze in the same event on the Paralympic podium !
