How do we make the metaverse accessible for group research❓ I am truly delighted to share that my first journal paper „Group Dynamics in the Metaverse: A Conceputal Framework and First Empirical Insights“ has been published in Small Group Research Sage Journals and Call for Papers. ✅ As a fabulous team of authors, Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Sebastian Rings, Anita Blanchard, Frank Steinicke, and I developed a conceptual framework for 3D immersive meetings in the metaverse, that offers a new perspective on how to combine literature streams of Industrial & Organizational Psychology and Human-Computer Interaction. As part of the Cross-Disciplinary Lab (CDL) „Computational Human Dynamics (CHD) – Multimodal Social Signal Processing of Dyadic and Group Interactions" at Universität Hamburg, this research highlights the opportunity of interdisciplinary cooperation 🤝 To operationalize the uniqueness of the immersive meeting experience, we introduced qualia as a key group of constructs for group dynamics in the metaverse. In current HCI literature, these subjective experiences are described as qualia, defined as mental states that occur in connection with triggering physiological stimuli. As a first glimpse into an empirical operationalization of this framework, results of our pilot study indicate that participants experienced satisfying immersive meetings with low to moderate task load and simulator sickness. In this chapter we describe a course concept on how the metaverse can be made accessible to students in higher education. 👨🎓👩🎓 I look forward to all further projects in the context of immersive meetings in the metaverse. 📈 Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Beyond grateful for the last 3 months at University of North Carolina at Charlotte ✅ It has been a fabulous chapter in the US during my research stay in Charlotte. I reflect on exciting projects and a great team at Anita Blanchard’s VICE lab. Here we were able to conduct and prepare further research on future implementation of virtual meetings. A superordinate construct here is often what is referred to as "entitativity", i.e. the perceived degree of „groupness“ of a group 👨💻 🧑💻 Another highlight was the preparation for this year's #INGRoup2024 conference at University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where I was able to help with the organization. The INGRoup conference brings together researchers from different backgrounds to discuss the latest findings on group and team research. 👥 Overall, I was very pleased to be able to delve myself again in the US college experience. UNC Charlotte indeed has a beautiful campus! In addition to a large gym (5 floors) and courts for almost every sport, I found the botanical garden and imposing buildings particularly remarkable. 💪 🌸 🌳 🇺🇸 Thank you very much for the warm welcome Anita and all other lab members 🫶 A big thank you also to my two PhD supervisors Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock and Frank Steinicke, so that we were able to pave the way for the research stay at an early stage. This valuable international chapter was only made possible by the scholarships from Der Übersee-Club e.V. and DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst for which I am extremely grateful. 🤝 Looking back, I can see how refreshing, decelerating and inspiring such a "temporary change of scenery" can be. It was a blast #INGRoup2024! ✅ I reflect on an outstanding INGRoup conference here at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The conference days were filled with exciting talks, inspiring panels and a great setting to connect with researchers and practitioners from around the world. 🌎 I was very pleased to be able to contribute two of my own presentations to the program. 1️⃣ In the joint session "Hybridity and Virtuality in Teams" with Franzisca Fastje, Liana Kreamer, Ph.D, and Bishan Wang I presented a literature review on "Social Virtual Reality in Teams". Under the leadership of Dr. Chitra Dey, Sebastian Ulbrich, M.P. Ganesh, Yannick Frontzkowski, and I have investigated the extent to which the metaverse can offer a valuable venue for group interactions. 📈 2️⃣ In the joint symposium "Meeting Mayhem" with Dr. Marie Ritter and Darien Tartler, I presented preliminary results of our study on hybrid meetings. Together with Nale Lehmann-Willenbrock, Fabio Krüger, Katherine Castro, and Joe Allen we are (among other things) investigating differences between virtual and on-site participation in hybrid meetings. 💼💻 Another highlight was a visit to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, where we were able to put our racing skills to the test. 🏎️ As part of my research stay at UNC Charlotte, I was also glad to be able to help organize this year's conference together with the fabulous team of Anita Blanchard’s VICE Lab. 🫶 Here's to continuing the great conversations, implementing new ideas and new collaborations! 🤝 #INGRoup2024 #conference #charlotte #presentation #hybrid #metaverse
