🌐🚀 Exciting times ahead! Next month, I'll be immersing myself in a whirlwind of innovation and cooperation at two pivotal events. First, I'll be attending the OSPO for Good Conference at the United Nations, a platform that's rapidly changing the dialogue on open source within the UN system. This conference is not just about discussing the policies and practices of Open Source Programme Offices (OSPOs); it's about showcasing how OSPOs are catalyzing global cooperation through open source initiatives. The action symposium serves as a high-level coming out party for open source in the UN, offering thematic tracks that delve into the heart of open source policy and showcasing real-world examples of 'open source for good' projects from across the globe. The theme of 'open source networks as enablers of global cooperation' is set to dominate discussions, highlighting the potential of open source to bridge gaps and foster collaboration on a worldwide scale. Following this, I'll be part of the Linux working sessions focused on building open innovation. This is an opportunity to dive deeper into the mechanics of open source, exploring how we can harness its power to drive forward positive change and technological advancements. These events represent a crucial moment in the evolution of open source policy and practice, not just within the UN but globally. I'm thrilled to be part of these conversations and to explore how we can leverage open source to address some of the world's most pressing challenges. Collaborating Beyond Borders: CERN's Open Source Partnerships and Innovations 🌐 At the birthplace of the World Wide Web, there is a long-standing tradition and experience in sharing #software and #hardware solutions through #opensource licences. Did you know that the Laboratory even developed the CERN Open Hardware Licence to promote collaboration among hardware designers? 🖥️ The CERN OSPO takes this up a notch: it will of course serve the CERN community by providing support and insights on open source, but is also on a mission to empower the world’s open science ambitions through CERN’s open software and hardware – well beyond basic research. 🤝 The OSPO website is a treasure trove of information to start tapping into CERN’s Open Source #technologies. OW2 gives a keynote at OSXP Paris, Dec. 7, 9:50 AM CET, room Passy. The most important is not the keynote itself, but the content! I will introduce NGI0 Commons, probably the most important fund ever for European #opensource projects? Almost 22 millions EUR redistributed to the community, through a cascade funding mechanism based on continuous open calls. The objective? Help build an Internet that responds to people’s fundamental needs, including trust, security, and inclusion. And digital #commons based on #publicgoods, that respect privacy and civil rights. Anyone can apply for funding: researchers, SMEs, communities, even individuals! The initiative, part of EC's NGI - The Next Generation Internet programme, is led by NLnet foundation, and backed by most European foundations, with OW2 in charge of community building. We expect about 300 projects to be funded in the next 3 years. So, why not yours? Is your personal network more open or closed? What does that mean... and which is better? As with many network science measures, it depends on your goal. Closed networks are best for 'learning networks' that aim to refine existing information. By creating lots of close ties to share detailed information on a subject, these networks create trust, transparency, and eventually high-effective tools and processes for exploiting the knowledge and data they all share. On the other hand, open networks excel for 'innovation networks' by facilitating the exploration of new ideas for solving complex problems. By creating opportunities to connect with new entities from different backgrounds with diverse perspectives, we can generate emergent innovations to wicked policy problems and challenges. Many times, a closed network will generally shift to become more open as they continue to learn, experience the limitations of a learning-only approach, and begin to identify and implement shared solutions. It ultimately depends on what works for you and your partners. www : information networks Last Thursday, during my @tudelft networking event at @cern I had a complete nerd moment. I took a selfie with the commemoration of the place where a team came together to develop the world wide web, on the same year I was born (maybe a sign?) The wwweb is an example of what we call information networks. In this case, "the nodes are the web pages, containing text, pictures or other information, and the edges are hyperlinks that allow us to navigate from page to page". The web is not the internet, which would be a case of "technological network", in which the nodes are computers and servers and the links data connections between these computers (fiber or telephone lines). The web is a directed network, because hyperlinks run in one direction. You go from one page to the next, and it is not always possible to go back. One of the ways to measure the structure of the internet is using a crawler, a computer program that automatically surfs the web looking for pages. They cannot find all the pages on the web because some of them forbid crawlers and some others do not have entry links. There may be web pages that are not linked anywhere. That's why studying the entire structure of the web network is quite challenging. Other examples of information networks, besides the web, are e-mail communications, citations, patents or recommender indexes. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or LinkedIn could also be considered information networks, but they are generally placed in the bucket of social networks (these two overlap quite a bit) You can see a network of pages in a corporate website on the third image. ACM 4th International Conference on Information Technology for Social Good (GoodIT 2024) 4-6 September 2024, Bremen, Germany ACM GoodIT 2024 focuses on the application of IT technologies to social good. Social good is typically defined as an action that provides some sort of benefit to the general public. In this case, Internet connection, education, and healthcare are all good examples of social goods. However, new media innovations and the explosion of online communities have added new meaning to the term. Social good is now about global citizens uniting to unlock the potential of individuals, technology, and collaboration to create positive societal impacts.
