Addressing community health in rural areas requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond traditional clinical care, focusing on prevention, education, and collaboration with local stakeholders. Rural communities often face limited access to healthcare resources, transportation barriers, and socioeconomic disparities that impact overall health and wellbeing. Building strong relationships and trust within the community enables rural healthcare providers to better understand and respond to the unique needs of the population. 🧩 The Public Health Puzzle in Texas 🏥 As I survey the public health landscape across our vast state, I'm struck by both its complexities and opportunities. Texas faces obstacles like chronic disease, maternal health crises, and threats of illness, disasters, and more. The puzzle is further layered by our geographic and socioeconomic diversity. Public health needs can vary tremendously between rural towns and major cities when factoring in healthcare access, environmental risks, and resource availability. No single organization can solve these intricate challenges alone. Strengthening our public health safety net will take a collaborative effort bridging governments, hospitals, nonprofits, businesses, and communities. At Community Health Choice, providing accessible, quality coverage is core is our mission. But we're also leaning into our civic duty as a catalyst for broader public health initiatives - from equitable maternal care models to preventative education campaigns. It's rare I watch or listen to a podcast and am inspired. Remembering the word, "inspire" comes from the root, "in spirit", we can say my inspiration has its roots in love, which is exactly what this podcast speaks to: Love as a guiding principle in the leadership, management, and delivery of excellent healthcare. Apurv Gupta, MD, MPH, Stephanie Feals and guest, Erik Anderson of Adventist Health Castle go deep into the practical application of love in creating the excellence in healthcare delivery that wins a National Baldrige Award. But it's so much more than winning this prestigious award. It's about the love that brings together leadership, staff, patients, families and community. Together we're better, yes? I am a bureaucrat I had the distinct recognition that I would work within the system. I went to Oberlin college and there were plenty of people around me who rejected the system and forged their own creative way. But something inside of me said that I wanted to learn the system to change it from within. As I applied for a master of public health degree I grappled with going into health policy or health behavior. I felt like I had a health behavior heart and a health policy mind. In the Peace Corps I worked with individuals and communities on health education. I loved interacting directly with people, but I also realized that if broader structural changes did not take place, that all the education in the world might not have an impact. I ultimately decided to go into health policy. Today I work in HHS’s Office of Long COVID Research and Practice. The pandemic illuminated so many of the dysfunctions and inequalities that exist in our country. Long COVID continues to remind us that they still exist. Once a light has been shown on an issue it becomes much harder to ignore. I want to change the world. I always have-I think it’s in my DNA. Some days I come home from work and sob and feel defeated. The system is so broken. The power structures are so unequal. Yet I believe that the opportunities to learn from the pandemic and make things better have not passed-they are just starting. Last week I broke-I did not know how I could keep working in a system that is so broken knowing that people are suffering so much. But the fire that has always been inside of me never fully extinguishes. It finds a way to stay lit and I keep going. I want to live in a world where everyone thrives. Where everyone has what they need to live their best life and share their unique gifts with the world. I believe this is possible. It is idealistic, but I am not naïve. I am a bureaucrat. ** New $25 Million Program Offers Training, Coaching, and Financial Incentives to Grow the Home and Community-Based Care Workforce ** WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: California’s Caring4Cal initiative provides funding to enhance home and community-based providers’ caregiving skills, contentment, job stability, and opportunities for career advancement. DETAILS: In California’s health care landscape, home and community-based care is a vital segment, and growing that field is a priority for the state and the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI). The Caring4Cal program, a $25 million initiative, is expanding, enhancing, and strengthening the state's Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) workforce. To date, the program has awarded $720,000 in incentives to more than 3,500 learners to enhance their knowledge and expand this segment of the health workforce, and the program is still enrolling new applicants. This groundbreaking initiative provides free training, coaching, and incentives of up to $2,750 for eligible current and aspiring licensed or certified providers and Community Health Workers/Promotores/Representatives through May 2024.
