➡️ “It’s really problematic. We are not merely troublesome we are in a red alert situation in many many markets and as politics gets more polarized we have to decide what we do about institutions.” I don’t know a lot about PBS but folks I’m talking with have been thinking about this issue for a while, especially with many of the social impact companies shutting down, like Participant and Topic Studios. Outside of high awareness factual or biopic based programs IMO it’s very hard to connect with new movies and shows that feel like they’re leading hard with their social political agendas. Do we double down on niche or find more creative (and authentic) ways to tell stories that connect us? Maybe show us what drives a character that we can all relate (or aspire) to; show us new ways to see classic plot structures before trying to change hearts and minds. I believe films like Dune and Civil War did this effectively. Same with Fallout series. I’m going to try to take the extra effort to see these things in theaters this summer or watch them on first weekend on streaming. #storytelling #challenge

The TCA press tour, a biannual event dating back to the 1970s, involves companies spending significant sums to participate, filling panels with talent and providing meals. When successful, it fosters fruitful conversations and boosts viewership. However, participation is waning due to frustrations with the format, budget cuts, and the shift away from in-person gatherings. The latest cycle ended on July 17 after just eight days, with significant streamers like Netflix, Apple, and Amazon absent and no programming executives facing the press. #TCA #TelevisionCritics #PressTour #TVIndustry #EntertainmentNews #MediaTrends #TVPress #Broadcasting #CriticsTour #TelevisionEvents

As digital media becomes increasingly mainstream, I feel it is important to continue growing with the medium. I have been fortunate to have been in the broadcasting business long enough to witness many changes. Most of these changes over the years brought panic to some of my colleagues. I remember very well when the first computer automation system was introduced at the station. Oh, how scared we were. We were convinced it was going to crash. Initially, it was just a few commercials, then commercials and imaging. Finally, a few songs. Skip to today, and it's difficult to find live talent after 10 a.m. I used to think that was awful until I realized that embracing the digital world is the best approach—a marriage between digital and terrestrial. But radio has once again been slow to embrace technology. I've been trying to break that mold. The complaint seems to be about "time" to "make content" for digital. I'm not a big fan of excuses. Something as simple as setting up two cameras in the studio can be a very effective way to "recycle" the content you are already creating for your show. #broadcasting #digital #radio #content #tv #sagacommunications

The future of public broadcasting- and especially documentaries, is in the balance. And the battle lines are drawn, at least here in Oz. Newly appointed chairman of the national broadcaster, the ABC, Kim Williams, is one of Australia's leading public intellectuals- not bad coming from the man who once ran Murdoch's local empire. And he's not afraid to speak his mind. I was particularly drawn to his thoughts about the current state of documentary on the ABC. Asked ( at 27'35") how he felt it was performing, he didn't mince his words: “I think documentary is in a bad place and it needs restoration. And I do not mean it in an unsupportive way to existing ABC commissioning people.” So if it's not the talented and thoughtful commissioning editors at fault, where is the problem? Possibly in the ABC's top-heavy and highly centralised content selection process which strangely doesn't include any program makers? Just a thought. Commissioners have been turned into post-office boxes for a content group driving the ABC in the opposite direction of where the chairman believes it should be heading. So what should the ABC be doing with docs? Here's what Chairman Kim thinks, and I wager the Australian public would agree: “The ABC needs to rediscover how to spell documentary and to give documentary the presence and prominence that it needs, particularly in terms of the ABC’s responsibility as being a pillar of democracy in Australia,” he says. That doesn't sound like much of the recent output from Auntie's doc department, or the timid work we've heard has been green-lit by the content commissars. Nor does it conform with the recent awful decision to gut the output of the ABC's religion and ethics slot, Compass (which is bound to annoy the chairman). Is a stoush brewing? Let's see if the content controllers got the memo.

THE DIFFERENTIATORS: If you are not putting a premium on EXCLUSIVE ENTERPRISE CONTENT, then you should turn off the lights and head home. What are the DIFFERENTIATORS in your news coverage, what REASONS are you giving for people to choose YOU, and with so many options, WHY should they. If you can't answer these questions, then it's time for a heart to heart. The differentiators are EVERYTHING- and they better be more than just a slogan. They become the reason you stand out. They become the basis for your mission. They become the FABRIC of who you are as a team. They can be different from organization to organization, but they better be there. #nexstarnation #broadcast #digital #journalism #community

BUILD YOUR EGO! I got to the studio this morning and had a good time. For the most part, my boss throws in a question at me, “do broadcasters need to have ego to do well in their profession?” As a training broadcaster, journalist and anchor, I learnt something profound this morning. While taking the initial stance that ego is rooted in negativity. I had to relearn that having a healthy level of ego is indeed necessary and good in the broadcasting profession. He establishes that having a healthy ego rids you of getting intimidated by anyone. This is a result of the psychological state of your mind in knowing your worth and importance. In any field you’re in, have a healthy form of ego. To stand out and be team-spirited, a healthy ego is needed. #media #broadcasting #growth #branding #marketing

4moOr, is there a new model? When politics slams into institutions and tries to tear them down, maybe there’s a disruptive opportunity. Too many “red alerts.”
