During my training in offensive security and years as a cyber threat intelligence expert, I learned to think like an attacker—the best way to anticipate their moves and build effective defenses. Cybercriminals are organized like businesses in a highly competitive market. They have marketing, sales, R&D teams, HR strategies to recruit talent, and even customer service for affiliates and victims (perhaps an opportunity for start-ups: Victim Relationship Management?). They even design recovery plans post-dismantlement when law enforcement strikes. 💵 But most of all, cybercriminals are pragmatic and obsessed with their return on investment (ROI). One striking example is their shift toward exfiltration and data leakage blackmail to maintain high conversion rates, especially now that more companies use robust back-up strategies. What stands out most in my opinion is their ability to adjust ransom demands based on a victim’s profile... when they do not have direct access to its insurance limit for ransom payment, which makes it easier. They calculate their demands based on the business impact of downtime or data leaks, while keeping an eye on their own revenue targets—similar to how insurers try and adjust premiums! 💡 Just as security teams think like attackers, CISOs, risk managers, and C-levels should adopt the same mindset. Cyberrisk, cyberinsurance, reinsurance, and legal aspects: interesting discussions at the 26th Swiss Cyber Think Tank. My recommendation is to make sure to reduce your cyber-risk in the first place. Ask Kudelski Security for help before it is too late.

Are cyber budgets big enough? The answer is 99% of the time, no. Only in the most sophisticated and highly regulated organizations does the cyber team get meaningful resources and even then they spend the majority of their time and resources on defense. So why is that? Well, for starters, infosec is seen like life insurance instead of an actual business enabler. As a result, the CFO sees it as a cost center because they have few metrics they can look at and determine that the program is worth it. I fundamentally believe that it is the job of security leadership to set the perception that the security team is a business enabler and ultimately brings a meaningful return on investment (ROI) for the organization. The good news is that the right focus on security projects that deliver an ROI and improve security at the same time is completely possible. Most of the time those are identity related projects. For example, we did a study with Forrester that showed how going passwordless can deliver a 324% ROI for organizations. The Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty (AGCS) #Risk #Barometer highlights that cyber incidents have become the top global risk for the first time, with 36% of responses identifying it as such. This concern spans regions (Americas, Africa, Middle East, Asia Pacific, Europe) and company sizes (large, mid-size, smaller). Business interruption caused by cyber events is the foremost fear, and cyber #security resilience is the top environmental, social, and governance (#esg ) #risk issue. Across various industries, including consumer goods, financial services, government, healthcare, and technology, cyber threats are the primary company concern. “Looking forward, detection tools will be the next logical step for most companies to invest in.
