It's about amplifying Black voices and supporting Black-owned businesses. When discussing the Black Funding Principles, Principle 7 calls for the preservation of the Black philanthropy practice of self-reliance and mutual support. 🙌🏽 🙌🏾 🙌🏿 As philanthropic advisors, we see this principle as a guiding light towards sustainable, community-driven change. Applying this principle means honoring and amplifying the inherent strengths within Black communities. It's about acknowledging and relying on community know-how and resources first, while holding society accountable for equity. 💰 This principle’s key takeaway is that communities themselves should lead the way to change. Today, we honor Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history when the last enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. This day, coming two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States and marks a significant step towards justice and equality. Juneteenth is more than a commemoration of the past; it is a reminder of the enduring struggle for civil rights and equity. At Associated Black Charities, we recognize that while Juneteenth represents freedom, the fight against structural racism and inequality continues. Our work as educators, advocates, and conveners is rooted in addressing and dismantling the barriers created by systemic racism. We understand that true freedom includes access to economic opportunities, equitable education, quality healthcare, and fair housing. It means creating spaces where Black people and communities can thrive without the constraints of discrimination and prejudice. On this Juneteenth, we reflect on the progress made and acknowledge the work that still lies ahead. We call on our community to join us in advocating for long-term solutions that foster genuine equity and inclusion. Together, we can build a society where the freedoms promised in 1865 are fully realized for all. As we celebrate Juneteenth, let us renew our commitment to justice, equity, and the dismantling of structural racism. Celebrating Emancipation Day by starting my morning with the Giving Black Conference, and powerful words from Nneka Allen, CFRE, COC, PCC, Birgit Smith Burton, Mide Akerewusi, B.Sc., M.Sc. (Econ), CSR-P, CDEP. , Nicole Salmon, Camila Pereira, PhD and so many others! Philanthropy is embedded in Black values - from Ubuntu to Sou-Sous, giving shapes our cultures wherever we are. Learning about reclaiming the word philanthropy, Mansa Musa’s philanthropy, Black philanthropic action. “Human beings are a remedy to other human beings” “Ecosystems are a place, but they’re also more than that - they’re a community.” It’s also Black Philanthropy Month, and in America, Black people are giving away 11 billion annually. Do your communications speak to our communities? Emancipation Day always reminds me to call for reparations to the descendants of enslaved people. After all, if the British government could pay reparations to former slave owners until 2015, then surely reparations going the other way are possible.

Here is what you should do for Black History Month. If you are an American corporation: 👉 1. Pay your Black employees a 10% bonus. 👉 2. Hire three Black speakers to speak to your organization and give your Black employees that time off. 👉 3. Donate at least 20% of your previous annual charity budget to Black-led nonprofits by and for Black people. This is a bare minimum suggestion in my opinion. If you're a person, please continue to educate people about Black excellence and the continued impact of racism and injustice. But corporations are terrible at education. Just use your money already. 🌎💕 What did I miss? I see a lot of posts about awareness and solidarity, when most of my Black friends want money and tangible results. Why should Black people have to wait any longer to reap the rewards of a just society? (And please don't come at me with "what about...???" Driving Social Change Supporting Black philanthropy is not just a moral imperative for black individuals; it’s an investment in our nation's future. By championing Black philanthropy, we commit to a future where equity and opportunity are available to all, creating a stronger and more cohesive nation. Let’s recognize and support the powerful impact of Black philanthropy, ensuring that these vital efforts continue to flourish and drive the change we all wish to see. Let's start exploring each of these reasons in detail over the next 5 days, beginning later today and sharing some starterling statistics in the process.
