Following on the heels of his recent articles on the Bullas DO, Ferran tells us, 'As exciting as the wines from the Bullas DO are, not everyone wants to be part of the denomination. There are multiple reasons behind this choice. It may be that they feel out of step with the values or vision of the DO. Or it may be something more pragmatic, such as the €3,000 entry fee, which might be affordable for the large-volume co-operatives that dominate the DO but less so for a small bodega. These small producers face another handicap, which is that it is difficult for them to find grapes because the co-operatives require that all of their members sell the grapes to the co-operative itself. Thus, vine-growers must either choose the co-operative or sell grapes to a private company; they cannot do both.' He goes on to highlight four extraordinary wineries working outside the Bullas DO which are critical to understanding the wines of north-west Murcia. In 2021 Charles Lachaux won the Golden Vines World’s Best Rising Star Award 🏆 ... What happened next was, in his own words, “explosive to say the least”. Wine maker Charles Lachaux runs the top performing vineyard in terms of annualised returns (CAGR) over the last 3 years - Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux. In an interview with Robb Report Charles said: "The award changed my life, both professionally and personally… The impact on the pricing of my wines in the secondary market was explosive to say the least.” Charles took over vineyard operations in 2015. 🤯 From 2021 - 2024 his wines averaged 63% annual returns (CAGR) for vintages 2015 and onwards 📈 Across all his labels, the average 12x75cl case price according to Liv-ex Market prices went from £1,600 in 2019 to £14,000 in 2024. But this is a story of two halves. There are 11 vintages of Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux that have now fallen more than 60% since their peak in 2022. 📉 The wines are still up massively but are we seeing the two sides of the wine investment market? 1. The exciting potential for new producers to burst into the investment-grade category and; 2. The ability of “the trade” to over-speculate in an attempt to capitalise on stories like this. 🍇 Burgundy is a very exciting region from a drinking and investing perspective. Small supply levels, tiny appellations and an unrivalled wine production history and culture. Burgundy is truly one of a kind. Our next WineFi 🍷 co-investment syndicate is focused on Burgundy; it is one I am hugely excited about. I will link it in the comments along with the Robb Report article. This is not investment advice, capital is at risk.

We are lucky to live in (comparatively) close proximity to Central Otago, affording us the privilege of knowing winemakers, winegrowers and experts in the region, which has fruitfully provided us with the newest addition to our Dhall & Nash stable, Grasshopper Rock. Learn about the wine that Bob Campbell MW is calling "One of Central Otago’s most consistently top pinot noirs," here on our introductory blog; https://lnkd.in/gS9pGdb7

'Farmer Angus is a project within the Spier portfolio. The wines come from vineyards that have been under regenerative viticulture protocols for 15 years and have been farmed organically for most of that time. Regenerative viticulture is not simply the latest buzzword in the world of wine, nor is it only about carbon footprint (though the Farmer Angus wines are actually carbon negative). Correctly applied it adds massively to the microbial life of the soil, yielding better, more flavoursome wines..' https://lnkd.in/er3V44Wd #soilhealth #viticulture #regenerativeagriculture #Spier #microbes

What is old vine? How does it affect the wine? #Oldvines, which are abundant in the vineyards of North-eastern Spain, produce even more terroir-specific, concentrated wines due to their lower yields and well-established, deep roots. A particular characteristic of old vines is that they have to be manually harvested and from one vine you can only obtain 75cl of wine. Today, these old Garnacha vineyards are 50-100 years old on average, and at different altitudes in exceptional surroundings. Viticulturists from the five Designations of Origin (DO) that primarily cultivate Garnacha in Spain (Calatayud, Campo de Borja, Cariñena, Priorat and Tierra Alta) are reclaiming the history of this variety and producing wines with a strong sense of place. Giorgio Galli and Roberto Cipresso are working on the blue print of the new hotel and vineyard layout. The magic starts with the “Path of Charles”, a journey in the evolution of the grapes from the beginning of the civilization to the present. This path will show how artificial selection works as a selection of the grapes varieties to produce better wines.

Can You Scale Up Fine Wine? Fine wine has always relied on rarity and scarcity to establish its appeal. Fine wine thrives on the idea (real or perceived) of small scale, artisanal, never-changing production. But are these models still viable in today’s economy? If scaling-up increases the survival rate of businesses, shouldn’t all fine wine businesses be looking at growth? In other words, does one need to be small to be scarce? Is there a limit to how big a fine wine business can be? Join ARENI Global on December 5th - 4PM GMT- to explore how and why fine wine businesses scale up, the main challenges they face and the skills and resources it takes to grow. With: - João Gomes da Silva, Chief Commercial Officer, SOGRAPE, Portugal - Vianney Gravereaux – Sales and Marketing Director, ORNELLAIA & MASSETO, Italy - Ivan Massonnat, Owner, Domaine Belargus, France - Dan Petroski, Winemaker, Massican Winery, USA This Insight Series is free and open to all.
