So, what’s the point? What did we learn from all this? How can we share the stories from our “battle scars,” pain-points, and “Beautiful Messes” to help others avoid them? There are many things I love about the Association of Change Management Professional’s The Standard for Change Management. One of them is 5.5.2 Design and Conduct Lessons Learned Evaluation and Provide Results to Establish Internal Best Practices. Ahhh… Here's the thing, if you go through a messy, difficult, chaotic transformation – I bet you learned something. If you designed a beautiful and seamless change management plan that was flexible enough to meet every twist and turn and surprise – I bet you learned something. And I would wager, every change plan in between, has some lesson in it. The best thing you can do is take time to evaluate and document those lessons learned. Questions from The Standard can be applied to many processes, changes, transformations - and not just in the workplace. Here are a few directly from The Standard: “What are repeatable, successful activities? How can we ensure future projects go as well or better? What advice would you give future teams? What are some individual successes?” Another tip – share these answers far and wide with clear guidance of use and context. Just evaluating, documenting the answers, and stuffing them away completes a step, but only checks the box or closes the loop. Sharing, making the answers available, and re-looking at them allows for continuous learning and application. What’s your favorite way to share lessons learned?
