🌊 This year marks the 4th year of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). The 2024 Ocean Decade Conference - in Barcelona 10-12 April - offers a valuable opportunity to assess progress made in ocean science and management, to set priorities for collaborative efforts and to identify key areas requiring particular focus for a sustainable ocean future. Over 100 researchers, industry leaders and policy partners from across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain are gathering for the first time to celebrate the Co-Centre for Climate + Biodiversity + Water today, where they will draw up project plans for integrated solutions to the most pressing common challenges of climate change, biodiversity decline and water degradation. The €41.3 million Co-Centre is initially funded for six years by the Government of Ireland (Science Foundation Ireland and Shared Island Fund); the Northern Ireland Department of Agriculture, Environment & Rural Affairs; and UK Research and Innovation. In addition, the project will also receive more than 30% co-funding from over 30 industry partners. The Co-Centre is a collaboration between Trinity College Dublin, Queen's University Belfast and University of Reading, UK. The Co-Centre is one of the first international research centres to bring researchers across Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain together at such scale. It is placed to address challenges around maintaining a stable and liveable climate, securing and restoring biodiversity and the ecosystem services provided by nature, adapting to climate change, and reversing water degradation, which require collaborative cross-border approaches. 📣New report launch: A new report by the Future Earth community launched this month in Finland emphasizes the necessity of transdisciplinarity, a systems approach, and institutional transformation in research to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss. It identifies key research gaps and highlights that collaboration among researchers across disciplines is critical to create change. The report was commissioned by the European Commission, and is intended to inform the European Union’s Horizon Europe funding program. It’s based on inputs from over 120 scientific experts of the course of a year. We thank the researchers for their contributions and invaluable support from International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and Sustainability in the Digital Age & Future Earth Canada. We are delighted to be supporting the Collaborative Research Action call to address urgent challenges linked to climate and cultural heritage. Awards have been announced for 16 projects, including 10 which have UK researchers involved. The joint JPI Cultural Heritage, JPI Climate, Belmont Forum call aims to enable transdisciplinary research across the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. The projects all involve researchers from at least three countries as well as societal partners. Coastal Tales, which brings together teams in the UK, Ireland and the US, is aiming to show how heritage stories can generate tangible local action that diverse communities can draw on to adapt to a changing climate. Researchers will focus on Kodiak Island, Alaska, Dublin Bay in Ireland and southwest Wales, which brings together examples of environmental change affecting distinct communities with a shared sense of urgency. A collaboration across Ireland, Italy, Turkey, the US and the UK is looking to fill a gap in knowledge on the role wildfire has in damaging or creating cultural heritage. The FIRECULT project comprises international experts in geography, the arts, economics, forestry and planning. It aims to produce insights on climate-human interaction and develop innovative approaches to heritage conservation vis-a-vis wildfire. SASCHA is focused on developing innovative methods for understanding risks of climate change for heritage that allow for multiscale analysis and scalable approaches. The project includes four research partners in Italy, Norway, the US and the UK, bringing together significant experience in climate change and heritage and requisite expertise in physical sciences, social sciences and humanities, and technology.
