I need to spend $200 at Starbucks to get 1 free Cold Brew... ...Contrast, to the bougie coffee shop 2 blocks away (my wife's favorite for Americanos), I get 1 free one every 10 with a stamp card. Starbucks: 2.5% Rewards. Bougie: 10% Rewards. Except, I still go to Starbucks every morning because they are the only place with Nitro Cold Brew. Getting "free" coffees doesn't sway my morning decision in the slightest. When thinking of your positioning it's not just about price or discounts. Differentiation (only one with Nitro) or brand or convenience, among others, play a part.

Hello, Brand Lovers! Did you know that Starbucks, the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, has a language of its own? The Starbucks baristas, the people who make and serve coffee here, use many interesting slang terms to communicate with each other. For example, a "blonde roast" is a light roast coffee, and a "red eye" is a coffee with a shot of espresso added. Some of these terms are even known to the customers like "tall", "grande", "venti", and “trenta”, which are used to refer to the different coffee cup sizes. What we can learn from the Starbucks Puppuccino 🐶 ☕ When we go to a coffee shop, the goods and services we receive can largely be categorised into two groups: Expected and Unexpected. In the Expected: good coffee made from freshly ground beans, ambiance, hospitality, comfort, choice, rewards for loyalty. Since the coffee space is a crowded and competitive market, we demand these things as standard. In the Unexpected: Special promotions, partnerships and added value items, the stuff we can't get at home. For instance, the Puppuccino. An espresso cup full of whipped cream. Cost to Starbucks, minimal, almost non-existent. Benefit to consumer: Huge. Now every time I pass a Starbucks with my dog it becomes an event. A reason to go. It's symbolic of the flexibility of this third space, where anyone is welcome - even those with a waggy tail. And of course, if I'm going in for a free 'Pup Cup', I'm going to buy coffee while I'm there. This reinforces spending habits, positive association with the brand, and offers a surprise and delight moment. So next time you're working on a brief, perhaps ask yourself - what are the Expected and Unexpected benefits I can bring to life. You are ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR PEOPLE! Here is a little story from last week… I went to Starbucks twice last week. I am not your typical customer as l don’t drink coffee nor consume sugar but this is the only place in town where I can get “a grande matcha latte soya no sugar extra foam… and served in my own take-away mug 🍵” Thursday I got my mug back. Typically it’s filled to the brim but this time it came back 2/3 full… Surprised, I asked: “Why? I always get it full”. To which the store manager replied: “No, this is what it is, you ordered a grande”. To which I replied back “yes but you only have one size for the matcha; I always get it back full as I ask for extra foam (ie AIR bubbles which accounts for at least the other 1/3)”. To which he replied back “A grande is a grande”. Needless to say I walked out a dissatisfied customer. Friday I went to a different Starbucks in my same city, preparing for the worst… but I did crave my matcha! I got my mug back which was also 2/3 full… but as the employee was pouring it she said spontaneously “look I have all this extra-extra foam here… is it ok if I put it in to fill it to the brim?” I go only maybe 20x times a year to Starbucks but which experience do you think would make me go more often? In summary: You are only as good as your people. Who would you pick to have in your team? Which employee will you be? On a cool November morning, while leaving Starbucks with a tremendously overpriced latte, I noticed the disposable cup holding the liquid gold in my hand. My eyes locked on words I had not seen before—The Barista Promise. That morning, the back of the cup near the check boxes for decaf, syrup, milk, etc. displayed the following guarantee: “Our Barista Promise: Love your beverage or let us know. We will always make it right.” To their credit, Starbucks Baristas keep their pledge. If your coffee is too cool, they will pour you another cup. If it is too warm, they will drop an ice cube through the steam. If it is made incorrectly, they will remake it to your satisfaction. Granted, they should, when a latte costs almost double a gallon of gas, but I have never left Starbucks dissatisfied with my order. When (and if) I mention their “wrong,” the Barista makes it right. I do not support many of the decisions Starbucks has made as a company, but it is not the Barista’s fault. He, or she, keeps the Barista Promise. What would “The Church’s Promise” be? There are many promises we should keep—promises to God, Christ, our spouse, our children, and our communities. But could the church make the same promise to each other? “Love us or let us know. We will always make it right?” Truthfully, some people will never be happy. Criticism is their “spiritual gift.” Even so, that does not forfeit our responsibility to correct our errors. If we have been wronged by a brother, let us settle the dispute before we worship together. If we have treated someone dishonorably, let us honorably acknowledge and repent our wrongdoing. If we have used poor judgment, let us promise to use better judgment. Jesus wanted to be trusted and respected. Therefore, He did not give reasons to doubt His authenticity or character. If we want to pattern our lives after His, integrity will hold paramount importance in our hearts. It is never wrong to make things right. Awwwwww yea, triple star day is tomorrow!!! But wait, shall we do some back-of-the-cup math? A Starbucks cold brew iced coffee costs me $5.62. I need 200 stars to get a free cold brew iced coffee. On a normal day, my $5.62 order earns me 10.5 stars (5.25% of a free cold brew). On a normal day, my $5.62 order earns me $0.30 cents toward my next free cold brew. On a triple star day, my $5.62 order earns me 31.5 stars (15.75% of a free cold brew). On a triple star day, my $5.62 order earns me $0.89 cents toward my next free cold brew. If this promo is successful and if I were not already planning on going to Starbucks on Tuesday, my triple star day, Starbucks just sparked $5.62 in income in exchange for an additional palm greasing of $0.59. Netting $4.31 from me in the process, on a day when I were not visiting Starbucks. Not that exciting when you peek under the hood…unless you’re Starbucks. P.S.
