Is a national coalition government on the cards? If so, who will the ANC govern with and is this the best option for them and the country? If not, who would be the best coalition partners to take South Africa forward? What should parties focus on to take the country forward? How likely is this coalition government to succeed or will they go the same route as the local government coalitions? Is a national coalition government here to stay or will the ANC or another party get an outright majority in 2029? writes Dr Harlan Cloete, research fellow in the UFS Department of Public Administration and Management. 💡 Coalition insights for future South Africa Government of National Unity: ✒ Junior partners tend to suffer a higher cost of governing because the (a) get fewer benefits from office, (b) have less control over the agenda, (c) have less personnel capacity to manage both governmental and partisan affairs. ✒ By contrast small parties that enter parliament but remain in opposition can be flexible with their stances because they are not constrained by public policy choices, which explains why parties that marginally obtain parliamentary representation gain rather than lose votes at the next election. #SAcoalitions Read more 👉 https://lnkd.in/dzHVQKa7

President Luis Abinader of the #DominicanRepublic was re-elected for a second term, capturing 57.18% of the vote in the general elections held on May 19. With this result, President #Abinader surpasses the 50% threshold required to avoid a runoff, a clear indication of strong voter support. Under his leadership, the Dominican Republic has seen significant economic achievements, including a forecasted GDP growth of 5.1% for 2024, which is the highest in Central America. Additionally, the poverty rate has decreased, and unemployment has improved, reaching a low of 5.0% at the end of 2023. President Abinader's administration has also been marked by its firm stance on the crisis in Haiti, including security measures and border management. Looking ahead, his focus will remain on economic growth, constitutional reforms, and maintaining robust security policies. The full legislative election results are still pending, which will determine the extent of the PRM’s control in Congress. #DominicanRepublic #Elections2024 #EconomicDevelopment #Policy #Governance

Noting that citizens' trust in public institutions in South Africa continues to decline, he pointed out that some opinion polls indicate that nine out of ten South Africans are not satisfied with the performance of the African National Congress-led government.
