I missed the days that I wake up in the morning and to check on the papers how we have performed and rank in the business soccer league. Even during my younger days, the inter school competition are being reported on the papers. I missed the days that beside my textbooks, I always bring an extra set of PE attires for games before school, during recess and after school. I missed that days that we play football at the void decks, basketball courts and any open field, with a tennis ball, pong pong fruit. I wonder why Singapore do so well for individual sports and less focus on team sports. How can the national team progress even when the Pro league to not have stadium on their own ? I wonder how many companies out there or people out there who are willing to step forward and help the local football scene here or rather support their team in a different league. Gone are the Malaysia cup days ? Are we too late ? It is a culture and not just about money. Only the rich can send their kids for extra private coaching, be it sailing, fencing, swimming. Are Singapore too well cared for that everything is so dependent on the government that when things go wrong, finger always pointed at them ? The private sector can play a crucial role in youth sports development by partnering with the government to create effective and sustainable initiatives. Are foreign footballers capable of respecting our Malaysian culture? Malaysia has been a favourite destination for over a thousand foreign footballers, including iconic international players such as Pablo Aimar, Dani Güiza, and El Hadji Diouf, who sought livelihood when the Football Association Malaysia (FAM) permitted local clubs to recruit foreign players in 1989. With changes in the quota for foreign players occurring several times in the last decade, the number of incidents involving foreign footballers assaulting game officials has steadily risen over the years. Doubts have also arisen regarding the ability of local football coaches to manage foreign players and their ability to educate them to respect the Malaysian football landscape. The African Cup of Nations is in full flow with the best talent in continent for all to see. 15 months ago I had the privileged to be invited to Ghana for the first time on a football scouting tournament. I was blown away. but… …I left with so much more. 1. We were ridiculously oversubscribed! Initially we planned for 200 players and almost double the amount showed up. Players traveled from almost 6 hours away just because they heard we were coming. Logistically it was crazy. I had to put my old school “soccer schools” hat back on to help organise. 2. All the teams worshipping together Before we left to go to the pitches, all the team were singing and worshipping together. I’d never seen anything like it before. The sheer spirit of togetherness. It set the tone for what would be a memorable trip and tournament no matter the outcome. 3. The teams didn’t want our lunch Initially the teams weren’t eating. Why? Because they were used to eating only two times a day and didn’t want to eat for their performance to be negatively affected. I was speechless. 4. Level of technical skills were unbelievable Despite the jagged pitch ground or water soaked puddles the technical ability of the players were second to none. No excuses. Just pure adaptability and ingenuity. 5. Fierce competition To say the competition was fierce is an understatement. There was no responding to hard challenges in the slightest. To coin a famous phrase from Iain Dowie, the players “bouncebackability” was first class. 6. The unexpected hospitality On the very last day as we arrived at the airport we were met with a touching surprise by the captain and the manager of the winning team meeting us at the airport to show their appreciation and see us off. There was not better way the trip could have ended. Lesson: In life, don't miss the unplanned teaching experiences. _ Always Remember. Singapore Football 2040? In the musical chairs of national football coaches in this tiny island state, the tune stops again and another one bites the dust. Whether it’s because he left or the Football Assiciationnif Singapore (FAS) lost patience, is besides the point. The game here is lost. And in the garden maze of looking for a way out, we may have forgotten what it really takes to build a team we all can be proud of - a genuine, intelligent, comprehensive ecosystem that rewards the dedication and passion for a game that is not only good for football, but ultimately necessary for the revival and rejuvenation of the sport here. There is no use trying to find a coach with that magic touch, or a “system” that works with our current cohort of would-be champions. This ship has sailed (and sunk?). What we can look forward to - and build towards - is a team in the future. And by that, I mean 15 years down the road. Why 15? Because that will mean we start looking for 5, 6, 7-year olds today and give them a platform where they can build technical skills, build their bodies and stamina, and nurture in them a believe, a spirit, and the confidence that football can and will be their future. Singapore doesn’t have to reinvent the wheel. Small countries have shown that they can compete in the world stage. There is no secret in building a national squad we can be proud of. The way ahead, if we are really serious about this is: 1. Give primary school children the opportunity to play and learn the game with joy and passion (affordable footballl academies, neighbourhood outreach programmes, school curricula that supports promising students) 2. Create competitive platforms for young footballers (neighbourhood tournaments, local school and club leagues and cup events) 3. Allow male footballers to continue playing and training throughout National Service 4. Work with foreign teams for football internships We have what it takes to follow suit. But we need to want to do it. The pieces of the puzzle must be put in the right place. But if the powers that be keep hiding these pieces from our sight, then pure hope is the only thing with which we are left.

Vietnam F.F. and LaLiga Join Forces for Coaching & Player Development LaLiga and the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) have entered into a partnership aimed at enhancing the growth of professional and community football in Vietnam. Under this agreement, the two organizations will collaborate on initiatives related to national teams and various sports training projects. One of the immediate initiatives is the establishment of LaLiga Academy Vietnam, which will provide training sessions for VFF coaches and youth football development units. This partnership is seen as a significant step in advancing Vietnamese football, particularly in the context of the VFF’s efforts to strengthen relationships with established football entities in Asia and Europe. During the signing ceremony in Hanoi, Ivan Codina, LaLiga’s Managing Director for Southeast Asia-Australia, Japan & South Korea, emphasized Vietnam’s strategic position for LaLiga in Asia and expressed the pride the organization feels in collaborating and growing together with Vietnamese football. Codina also pledged that LaLiga Academy Vietnam will support Vietnamese coach training programs by applying Spanish coaching methods. Furthermore, LaLiga and VFF have plans to facilitate the development of young Vietnamese football talents, including training opportunities in Spain and other cooperative programs. Never Let Standards Drop It's so easy for the team with the upper-hand to get complacent. Getting the basics right all the time is a non-negotiable. 2. Never Pull on the Hand-Brakes Being professional no matter who you play against is important. Having mercy on a weaker opponent may seem to be the right thing to do, but issit? "Taking the Mickey" or showboating is a NO! It only patronises your opponent. Play your best at all times. 3. Showing Character & Class Well the losing teams certainly have to show character, but the superior team? Without a doubt - being serious about the task and challenge in front of you only shows your dedication to your craft. 4. Gratitude Be grateful in winning. Tougher challenges lie ahead. Be ready for that!
