My home country, Nigeria, made it to the semi finals of the world's largest African football ⚽ tournament, AfCon! Proud is an understatement. The tournament, formed in 1957, is one of the continent's most notable entertainment events.
Its fascinating the role of social media is playing in the tournament. Viewer participation is at an all time high.
The tournament is broadcasting to 180 countries and with the rise of TikTok, users are more engaged than ever. The tournament is extremely unpredictable and as a result, the memes, celebrations, and trash talk are over the top! It’s an exciting time to be a fan!
I’m curious to see how the tournament will embrace the exposure gained on these various platforms to expand there brand.
If I were running AfCon’s social media, my next move would be…
📌Create player profiles so that viewers can get engaged with their background stories
📌 Highlight brotherhood/the underdogs, this will create investment from the fans who are undecided on a team
📌 Engage with the fans via stories and comments because the humor is unmatched and it serves as free marketing
