Two mistakes I see with underwater kicking that are killing speed: 1. SLOW up-kick.  The more time it takes the less propulsion is created, AND it can negatively impact the next down kick. 2. Recovering the legs with bent legs.  This prevents the undulation ‘wave’ from traveling down the body and turns it into a knee kick (which is slow). To better develop the up-kick, I like a lot of kicking on the back at strong efforts. It helps to build the muscles and the skill to execute a great up-kick. There are other strategies, but this is a key one for setting the stage for effective underwater kicking.

When it comes to creating propulsion, if swimmers can get more out of the same, they will go faster. With underwater kicking, if they create more length with the same kick rate, they’re going to get a lot better underwater. One of my favorite strategies for helping swimmers learn to create more propulsion is having them use a set stroke rate or kick rate and try to create more speed or distance. With underwater kicking, they have to get more out of each kick to make that happen. In this set, we’ll have them descend, kick for length, and try to hold their distance off the walls, all without changing the kick rate. And we’ll challenge them to do so at faster and faster kick rates. Rather than telling them to ‘kick better’, we can put them in position to figure out how to do just that. All while training the legs.
