Did you know you can use the bow thruster to steer the vessel when surging astern? When the vessel moves astern, the apparent pivot point moves to the stern. The distance between the apparent pivot point and the bow thruster creates a long leverage arm. This leverage allows the bow thruster to be used as a rudder when manoeuvring astern. 👌 Marine Facts , Dolphins: Mooring, Breasting & Berthing A dolphin is an isolated marine structure for berthing and mooring of vessels. It is a common practice to combine dolphins with piers which drastically reduces the size of piers. Dolphins are generally divided into two types, namely breasting dolphins and mooring dolphins. Breasting dolphins serves the following purposes: (i) Assist in berthing of vessels by taking up some berthing loads. (ii) Keep the vessel from pressing against the pier structure. (iii) Serve as mooring points to restrict the longitudinal movement of the berthing vessel. Mooring dolphins: As the name implies, are used for mooring only and for securing the vessels by using ropes. They are also commonly used near pier structures to control the transverse movement of berthing vessels. Mooring dolphins are single structures designed to take care of the tension on a mooring line. These ship prefixes generally refer to abbreviations carved before ship names, whether naval or merchant vessels. They consist of a few letters compounded to denote a specific meaning. These initials usually represent the type of vessel or propulsion system used in merchant vessels. Here’s what each of these initials stands for in a merchant vessel: 1. MT stands for Motor Tanker. This type of vessel is a tanker propelled by an engine rather than a sail or steam. Nowadays, most tanker ships are fitted with internal combustion engines. 2. SS stands for Steam Ship. This type of vessel is powered by steam. In the past, all ships were propelled by steam, usually generated by burning fossil fuels such as coal or oil. Today, LNG ships are still propelled by steam but are fitted with steam turbines for propulsion power. The steam is generated by main boilers, which are fed marine fuel. 3.
