The MLS All-Star Hometown Hero Showcase presented by RBC Wealth Management and in partnership with Black Players For Change recognizes organizations & their leaders committed to serving the Columbus community. This week we’re honored to spotlight Gina Ginn for their impactful work with Columbus Early Learning Centers. “Columbus Early Learning Centers envisions and strives for a Columbus community where all children, birth through pre-kindergarten, has access to a high-quality early learning experience, regardless of their zip code or economic status. We are grateful for the MLS community’s support to highlight CELC’s important work in Central Ohio.

Columbus Early Learning Centers was founded in 1887 in Columbus. Raising children, especially in this day and age, is very hard and so we want to make sure that we're there to support families. When you come into a classroom and you hear your name screen by kids and they come yell and I'll let you know that you're having some type of impact in supporting families, you really see transformation. You see children who start with us at six weeks and then graduate in preschool and the whole family is different. If you ever. In need, this is the place to be, whether it be for education or any other type of social services.
All for the change and yes, black! In your latest list of employment opportunities. Nothing that speak to youth engagement. I would reall like an opportunity to join your cooperate / social impact globally initiative. #LatinAmerica #Caribbean
Why not if MLB and the NBA can establish a youth ( education/sports) program why can't MLS?!
It was great hearing from prior Hiring Our Heroes alums talk about their previous experiences going through the Fellowship program. It helped put this first week at our host companies into perspective. The biggest takeaways that I got were:
1. Be humble and hungry to learn!
2. My network IS my net worth.
3. Treat every interaction as a potential interview and show you are a team player.
4. Soft skills > Technical skills
5. Remember to focus on my well-being.
Any other advice from anyone for onboarding into a new job?

Most of you know that I volunteer as the Vice Chair of the Board for the Horizons at The Foote School program in New Haven, CT which is an immersive academic and enrichment program serving over 160 New Haven Public Students (grades K-8 with a newer High School Mentorship Program to reach the 9-12 kiddos as well) each year with year-round programming that is anchored around its robust summer component. We are a largely privately funded program that provides this opportunity free of charge to families and if you are looking for ways to help advance equity in education, see our support page for ways you can help us with our work: https://lnkd.in/eFskdnb7
Today, I had the privilege of not only presenting but seeing the fruits of my organizing a special panel of friends for our “Career Day Chat” for the middle school class. With the help of my friends Elijah Hampton, James Williams, Willie Henriquez, and Jordan Blatche, among the five of us, we presented a multifaceted group of professionals who are business owners, musicians, real estate investors, accountants, serial entrepreneurs, correctional officers, and attorneys for career day. These gentlemen showed up in such a real way and listening to them speak I only became more inspired and grateful to have these guys in my circle. The tough middle school crowd loved them as we shared jokes and laughs and thoughtful and engaging follow-up questions. Such a special moment was shared today, and I’m just moved to have been able to witness it.
So much was talked about but some of the messages we shared were:
- “You are only as good as the company you keep.”
- “Model what you need.”
- “Mistakes will happen, but do your best to not make the mistakes that you can’t make a comeback from.”
- “Ask for help and seek mentorship.”
- “Make a covenant to be the best version of yourself that you can be.”
- “There is more than one way to be successful. With that, school may not be the path for you, but all of us need to develop a game plan for success.”
- “Shutup and work – not everything you must do you will like.”

So pleased to see the exceptional media coverage and support of the Raheem Sterling Foundation over the weekend highlighting our work with the #UniversityofManchester and #KingsCollegeLondon. The continuation of our fully-funded London and Manchester scholarship program is now in its second year. The initiative is designed to level the playing field by offering equal access to higher education, in direct response to the underrepresentation of black students from London and Greater Manchester areas who constitute just 8.5% of first-year undergraduate entrants in the UK.
We are committed to alleviating financial strain, enabling young persons from under-represented backgrounds to truly maximise their talent in a chosen field. Our full-time mentorship programme also guarantees a vital support system across the 3-year terms.
Guided by our #PowerOf7 strategy, we aim to inspire and support young people through education, employment, enterprise, community, creativity, leadership and social mobility
Why This Initiative Matters
#SocialMobility: We believe that every young person, regardless of their background, should have the chance to improve their opportunities, careers, and quality of life. Our initiatives are designed to remove obstacles and create pathways for success.
#Community: From our collaboration with local schools to our international projects, we are dedicated to building safer, supportive communities. For example, our Community Kitchen at Ark Elvin Academy in Brent has brought families together, providing meals and fostering a spirit of togetherness.
#Creativity: The ‘Making of Me’ project, in partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, has given young people the chance to explore their creativity and develop skills for future careers in the arts.
#Leadership: Through initiatives like #BrentGoesGlobal, we are equipping the next generation with leadership skills and global perspectives, preparing them to become the leaders of tomorrow.
