More than 10,000 individuals were homeless one January night in New Jersey, underscoring the pressing issue of housing insecurity. The fact that 47% of our state's homeless population is comprised of individuals who are Black shows the undeniable intersection between homelessness and racial equity. This discrepancy compels us to implement policies that guarantee housing accessibility, transcending generations. To foster a Culture of Health, we must champion comprehensive policies that prioritize racial equity. One of my proudest moments in my work in philanthropy over the years is the work of Forward Promise. The incubation and thought leadership of Frontline Solutions and BCT Partners transferred to the brilliance of Howard Stevenson and Dr. Rhonda Tsoi-A-Fatt to create a community of leaders where young people were at the center of our narrative of well-being is a pioneer to some of the solidarity work we are witnessing today. I am so glad my colleague Jennifer Ng'andu continues champion the value of this community in the work of RWJF.

Fiscal sponsorship is a way to financially incubate emerging non-profits so that they can focus on their mission while their back end functions are supported by an existing infrastructure. The fiscal sponsor should be a trusted and supportive partner in your non-profit's development. Too many organizations have been extracting resources from organizations with high fees and mediocre service only to leave non-profit's dependent on their services and not growing. Now is the time for NJ to examine our direct involvement with slavery and to study the impacts of slavery on the wellbeing of Black people in NJ. As a lifetime resident of NJ it has been one my greatest personal and professional joys to be a member of the NJ Reparations Council as a Co-Chair of the Health Committee as we study the health impacts of slavery in NJ. Reparative policies and practices are a pathway to healing and I look forward to when the recommendations are in the field on Juneteenth of 2025 and how NJ will embrace these opportunities to repair past harms of slavery and segregation in our home state.
