How did Beckham survive all that hate? There’s a brilliant and compelling documentary on Netflix about David Beckham. In episode three, David Beckham is asked the question, ‘How did you get through it?’ (The interviewer was referring to the torrent of boo’s, anger, rage and hatred that the English press and fans unleashed on Beckham after THAT red card in '98) David’s answer, ‘‘I really don’t know’. What?!? I felt a little shocked by that. I don’t know about you, but the reason Beckham thrived was clear to me. Unlike the England Manager, Glen Hoddle, who threw Beckham to the wolves after the 98’ World Cup, his teammates at Man United, ESPECIALLY Sir Alex Fergusson, remained loyal, through the highs and lows. + They had his back. 👊 + They stood by him through it all. 🫂 + They were in his corner. 🥊 + They gave him unwavering support. 💪 I believe that’s how Beckham managed (and eventually thrived through) the relentless abuse he received on and off the pitch. + A united team (pun intended 😂). + A team in alignment with who they are. + A team whose communication and togetherness is solid. + A team that sees challenges as opportunities to grow. A testament to the power of a ‘togetherness’ and ‘team identity’. And that POWER meant that they went on to achieve something no other team had achieved before EVER!, by winning the triple in 1999. Remember, alignment is NOT about avoiding rough seas; it's about acknowledging the storm and swiftly adjusting the sails to come back on course. Happy Halloween!! You can learn a lot about leadership from a golf caddie. A caddie walks along side their player, but sometimes you will see the caddie out front and other times behind the player. A leader must know when to walk alongside window let your employee lead, and when you need to lead. Allowing the employee to lead teaches them leadership skills as well. A caddie must know their players, strengths and weaknesses. Just like a leader, must know his employee, strengths, and weaknesses to put them in the best position to Win. A caddie is not the star of the show. He is not the one who wins the green jacket. It is the player that is the star and walks away with a trophy. A leader must remember this. We are not the star of the show if we are making ourselves the star, we are not leading affectively. A caddie keeps the stats and historical data on their player and uses that information to help their player make wise decisions about the next shot. Just like a great leader, will look at their employees past performance to help raise their game and future performance. We need more leaders to act like caddies and serve their employees to help them succeed.

5 LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE TOM BRADY ROAST 🎤 Picture it: You're attending Tom Brady's last game of his last season, and he scores the winning touchdown for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 13 seconds left on the clock. 🏈 INSANE. Paul and I are big fans. When we heard Netflix would air a Tom Brady Roast, we HAD to watch it! In between the tears and cringe, I had some major lightbulb moments. 💥 What can we learn from Tom Brady? 1️⃣ When you're the best, the GOAT 🐐, you probably have a team of people who support you all along the way. We don't make it alone (even if they come back years later to throw it all in your face). 2️⃣ When life throws you under the bus (orrrr your friends do), take it on the chin, smile, and grab another drink. 🍷 3️⃣ Every successful person has a mentor. Whether you love them or hate them, or they drove you nuts, or they made you feel a certain way, those moments with them were the moments you were growing. 💪 4️⃣ When you put in the work and you win, practice AND repetition are critical to continued success. Tom knows a thing or two about hard work, longevity, and dedication to his craft. 🏆 5️⃣ Sometimes your competitors are your best asset. Iron sharpens iron. Thank you, Peyton and Eli Manning! You made Tom better. 😆 But for real. Hello CCOs and CCO aspirants! Earlier this year I was honored to be asked to speak at The One Club for Creativity Creative Leaders Retreat. I spoke on something that I should, in theory, know something about. Being a CCO. I have been a CCO for over half my career. It's a hard job. No one tells you how to do it, what you're going to need to know or why. It's not the same as being an ECD. It's still about "the work." But not in the same way it was before you become a CCO. Now it's about helping create the conditions under which great work happens. That is what this post is about. It is not about baseball despite the fact that that is the rubric used - I don't even like baseball that much! But it seemed like a useful framework for this talk. And - this was not the deck I presented. Because that one was accompanied by 45 minutes of talking and explanation (but it's close).
