✨ In the first of a series of ‘Meet our 3MT Finalists’ we introduce Jessamine Giese from QUT Creative Industries, Education and Social Justice. Jessamine is entering the 3MT Grand Final with her presentation: Teams in early childhood education and care: can they make the quality dream work? 🏫 Jessamine’s research is based on the suite of government policies and reforms that commit to quality early education and care in Australia, and locates the tensions between these policies, the ways early education centres enact these policies, and how educators work together to make decisions. “Teams of educators with diverse qualifications are expected to work collaboratively to interpret the legislation, frameworks, and policies from these reforms, each describing their roles and responsibilities in multiple ways. 🌟 Exciting Insights from the Rennie Center's "Rethinking Education: Condition of Education" Event 🌟 We want to thank the Rennie Center for yesterday’s event, celebrating the release of their 2024 Condition of Education report, entitled “Rethinking Education: Reimagining when, where, and how learning happens.” We enjoyed hearing about the Condition of Education initiative, which serves as a cornerstone in developing a coherent vision for public education. It aims to guide efforts in putting every child on a path to success in college, careers, and life. This year's series spotlighted broader patterns in Massachusetts’ public schools, providing research-backed recommendations for action in key areas. A significant focus was on equitable outcomes for all students. The event featured a comprehensive Data Dashboard, showcasing state-level indicators of school performance, illuminating both areas of success and those needing improvement, from early learning to workforce development. The Action Guide with research-informed recommendations for statewide actions, including policies and best practices to bridge performance gaps and foster broad improvements in student outcomes, was also a highlight. We left yesterday's Rennie Center event feeling incredibly energized! The "Condition of Education" discussion was not only enlightening but also invigorating. It was fantastic to network with colleagues, share ideas, and feel united in our goal of reshaping education in Massachusetts for the better. Today, UPCEA published a new higher education playbook, supported by a grant from Walmart, and aimed at accelerating the development and delivery of noncredit, short-term credentials that are effectively directed at the workplace. “Building Capacity, Expanding Pathways: Accelerating the Growth of Credential Innovation in Higher Education” features lessons learned and promising practices discovered by 10 institutions during a year-long project focused on credential innovation and grounded by collaboration with the business community. In our faculty meeting this week, we discussed techno-bureaucratic thinking, which refers to a mindset or approach that combines technical and bureaucratic aspects in decision-making and problem-solving. It can lead to a lack of flexibility, stifles innovation, encourages depersonalization, an over reliance on quantitative data, top-down decision-making, and in-efficiency in rapidly changing environments. We discussed what techno-bureaucratic thinking looks like in K-12 schools and higher education. We will continue these conversations in the spring to guide thinking about our processes, policies, and sense of community in the School of Education. https://lnkd.in/gpEKGXKG

In the past academic year, 77 faculty participated in the Equity Champions Program, an opportunity led by faculty, the Institute for Engaged Learning, and the Center for Teaching and Learning. This program offers faculty and staff educators a safe space to learn and grow and teaches them how to create more inclusive and equitable experiences for students in their courses. Among the initiatives that program participants took this year was embedding the Ascend Survey into their courses to elevate students' voices. Ascend is a survey that asks students how they experience their courses and how the courses can improve. Faculty received over 4,000 responses from students. The Equity Champions Program is just one way that the Division of Undergraduate Education and Indiana University Indianapolis as a whole is working to make our institution inclusive and equitable for faculty, staff, and students of all backgrounds and experiences. #EquityAndInclusion #HigherEducation #ProfessionalDevelopment
