Today's first presentations of the European Vegan Summit 2024 were very insightful! The presentations, which focused on developments in the vegan market, revealed the following key learnings, among others: ⚗ As the meat industry has recently been advertising more heavily against vegan products with the argument that they are unhealthy (although the majority are inherently healthier than meat products), the focus of many manufacturers is currently on making their products even healthier. 💰 While customers are responsible for what they buy and therefore what is produced in the long term, they are strongly influenced by their environment, for example where products are found in the supermarket, the order of the menu in the restaurant and of course pricing (this point was rated most important). ⚖ Since pricing and environmental promotion is so important, companies need to adjust prices a bit for market penetration and government promotion should become more popular (take New York City as an example!). 💖 As a first step, manufacturers should not try to sell their products to everyone - find the group of people who love your product and sell it to them! If the first contact with vegan products goes wrong, it can lead to a poor customer experience that makes vegan products in general seem less attractive in the future. Our paper on urban food governance in Prague and Brno is out! Our data show that municipal actors in large cities in Czechia are so far interested only in those aspects of local food system transformation which can be well integrated into the corporate food regime and capitalist urban economy, such as temporary community gardens or food waste reuse and reduction, while more transformative alternatives which require municipalities' larger involvement, public land and systemic changes, are ignored and disregarded. This mainly concerns traditional self-provisioning in allotment gardens, stable conditions for authentic farmers' markets and infrastructural support for local farmers. We are pleased to share that today, Wednesday 17th of April 2024, EIT Food Accelerator Network alumnus BioMush will be participating in Eduskunnan vegepäivä (Finnish Parliament's Veggie Day), a significant event promoting plant-based foods and their economic, health and environmental benefits.   Eduskunnan vegepäivät is organised at Eduskunta | Riksdagen | Parliament of Finland with the support of WWF Suomi and the European Union. On my way to #Vienna to talk about the most relevant issues when it comes to #novelfood at a conference from Agrarmarkt Austria Marketing which will take place tomorrow. Also "finalizing" my third book which will be published next month. After writing about the first year of motherhood in 2021, I am this time focused on how to preserve some of the world for the next gen and am writing about sustainable solutions along the food value chain, which kind of is writing about next level motherhood. Novel food certainly is part of what we need to develop for the future and "CHAINge" as I call, what we need.
