📣 NEW: Madre Brava has asked the 15 largest European supermarkets whether or not they are going to tackle emissions from their supply chain and whether or not they are going to actively support European consumers to shift towards plant-rich diets to do so.   The result?   By the end of this year, all retailers will have climate targets including Scope 3 FLAG (forest, land use, agriculture) verified by the SBTi in place. Asked about how food retailers can help plant-based food makers scale up, Alexander Liedke of Lidl in Germany said that cutting the price of those products to match conventional meat and dairy products gives a huge boost to sales. After the price parity move, Lidl Germany saw a 30% jump in plant-based sales in just 6 months. And the idea seems to be flying across borders. Since Lidl Germany reduced prices, Lidl Belgium & Luxemburg, Lidl Netherlands and Lidl Austria have followed suit and lowered prices of plant-based products to leave it to consumers to decide what to buy - with no price barrier. The question is what Lidl national branch would move next? Lidl Danmark? Lidl GB? Madre Brava is at ProVeg International's #NewFoodConference2024 to discuss with German supermarkets the upcoming Questionmark Foundation's #Superlist ranking.

Deutschlands Ärztinnen und Ärzte fordern Supermärkte zur Proteinwende auf Gesunde Menschen gibt es nur auf einem gesunden Planeten. Die Planetary Health Diet entspricht einer Ernährungsweise, die beides liefert.  Klare Maßnahmen, um Menschen dabei zu unterstützen, sich gesund zu ernähren, fordern nun auch Verbände von Mediziner*innen und Diätassistent*innen vom deutschen LEH. Auf Initiative von PAN Physicians Association for Nutrition International forderten KLUG - Deutsche Allianz Klimawandel und Gesundheit und der VDD Verband der Diätassistenten - Deutscher Berufsverband e. V. letzte Woche gemeinsam in einem offenen Brief die sechs größten Retailer auf, pflanzenbetonte Ernährung zugänglicher zu machen. Lidl in Germany, ALDI SÜD HOLDING, ALDI Nord Group, REWE, EDEKA ZENTRALE Stiftung & Co. KG, Kaufland Deutschland sollen sich Protein Split Ziele setzen, die im Einklang mit der PHD stehen und passend dazu die Preise für pflanzliche Produkte reduzieren. Außerdem raten die drei Organisationen dem LEH, die Empfehlungen der Superlist umzusetzen. Wir begrüßen die Unterstützung dieses Ziels vonseiten der Gesundheitsfachkräfte sehr! Wie schnell die deutschen Supermärkte hier ins Umsetzen kommen, wird sich zeigen. Die Superlist Environment wird die deutschen Supermärkte ab Herbst auf verschiedene Nachhaltigkeitskriterien untersuchen. Ende September veröffentlicht Questionmark Foundation die Methodologie und startet kurz danach mit der Datenerhebung. Im Frühjahr 2025 kommen die Ergebnisse des Rankings. Genau wie die Mediziner*innen und Ernährungsfachkräfte Deutschlands hoffen wir, dass sich die deutschen Supermärkte ihrer Verantwortung zu einem gesunden und nachhaltigen Ernährungssystem beizutragen bewusst werden. 🇹🇭 Another success story that highlights Thailand's potential to lead the growing plant-based protein market in the region! ❓ Who would have thought coconut water could be made into plant-based meat? After their success with coconut noodles, Sangtubtim Inter Co Ltd., with support from the Thai Department of Industrial Promotion (DIP), Ministry of Industry, has developed plant-based minced pork made from Samutsakorn-grown coconut and king oyster mushrooms. There are three exciting things to celebrate with this technology development: 1️⃣ First, this innovation supports local farmers growing coconut and opens up a new market for them. 2️⃣ Second, it underscores Thailand's capacity to lead the growing alternative protein market in Southeast Asia. 3️⃣ Last but not least, it is yet another good example of how the government and national entrepreneurs can team up to keep innovating in a key industry for Thailand: food production. This is of vital economic importance for the country because Thailand is the sole net food exporter in Asia. 💲 What remains to be addressed is consumer acceptance. For that, price parity and accessibility will be key. Madre Brava’s consumer research shows these are significant barriers for many consumers who want to increase their consumption of plant-based protein. 🛒 We believe food retailers can play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges. Supermarkets and convenience stores, for example, can boost the visibility of plant-based  protein products by displaying them more prominently alongside traditional meat products. Moreover, retailers can  lower the price of plant-based products to match that of the conventional meat to make it easier for consumers to choose the healthier, more sustainable option. ICYMI - Uniting the Food Movement: The Challenge of Ultra-Processed Foods 💡 The debate around ultra-processed foods (UPFs) risks dividing the food movement, but our strength lies in unity. Our Emily Armistead argues that the movement needs to embrace three shifts in the approach to the UPF issue: 1. Climate and animal rights activists need to push for innovations that minimise the effects of processing, while ensuring higher levels of nutrition in meat and dairy alternatives; 2. Those advocating for reduced levels of food processing need to acknowledge the necessity of some UPFs, especially in meat and dairy alternatives; 3. We all need to utilise the growing mistrust of Big Food triggered by the UPF debate in order to hold these huge corporations accountable for the impacts of the food they produce and minimise their influence over policymaking and research. "Across the movement we broadly have the same goal - a food system that is healthy for people and planet. Building alignment between civil society groups advocating across health, environment, consumer rights and animal welfare will be critical in achieving this" concludes Emily Armistead.
