Matt Adolphe, author of the Canadian workplace culture, spoke about how to thrive in the Canadian workplace. The participants found this session insightful and we look forward to inviting him again. Key Takeaways: 1. Canadians find conflict uncomfortable so be cognizant of indirect communication and other unspoken rules in the workplace. 2. In indirect communication cultures like Canada, there is not a lot of room to make mistakes. Be aware of the cultural nuances before starting your first job. 3. Small talk is a big deal and your ability to have a natural flow in this conversation can be a game changer for you. 4. Be inclusive in your communication especially during interviews. For example, when asked behavioural questions, try not to call out people’s names and race in your responses. You can also try to be gender neutral in your responses when asked to speak about difficult team members or former bosses. 5. We advise that you buy Matt Adolphe’s book😉. "Emotional intelligence is not just about knowing yourself; it’s about understanding and connecting with others to create a thriving environment." I’ve always believed that emotional intelligence is one of the most powerful skills to possess. I call it a skill because it’s something you can continuously develop and enhance over time. EI is all about how we understand and manage our emotions, as well as those of people around us. In the workplace, EI is incredibly important. It helps us communicate better, collaborate effectively, and handle conflicts with empathy. When team members are emotionally intelligent, they can connect on a deeper level, which fosters trust and cooperation. In short, building emotional intelligence not only enhances individual performance but also contributes to a positive workplace culture. It’s a vital skill that can make all the difference in how we work together and achieve our goals.

⚡ POWER. Who has it? Who doesn't? Is it real? ⚡ 🔷 It is impossible to look at power in the workplace without also looking at identity– this is why identity is the first Cornerstone of Belonging. We are all a multitude of identities across race, class, gender, ability, sexual orientation, age, religion and every other category we bring to the workplace. How power manifests within a workplace is shaped by our identities and the structural forces that hold these power dynamics in place. 🔷Some of the key learnings of the first few months in a role or position in an organization are to understand the power structure–both the official one found in an org chart and the informal power structure, the way the office or organization really gets stuff done. There is usually a delta or a gap between stated hierarchical structure and the actual processes. The smaller the delta, the greater the organizational health. Ask yourself these questions to better understand the power structure at your organization: 🔸Who has a voice and who doesn’t?  🔸Who speaks at meetings?  🔸Who calls meetings?
