OAG announces the winners of its Asia-Pacific (ASPAC) Aviation Network Champions. The list recognizes the journey toward recovery airlines and airports in the ASPAC region have been on since 2019. Key categories look at frequency and capacity growth for both long and short-haul operators, and the most improved networks and recovered routes. Using the world’s largest network of flight information and market performance, OAG determined the most successful airlines and airports based on connection and capacity growth, and recovery. Categories include: 1. Capacity Growth Airlines: Awarded the highest growth (%) in airline capacity between 2019-2023. 2. Frequency Growth Airlines: Those with the highest increase (%) in flight frequency between 2019-2023. 3. Most Improved Network Airlines: Those who added the most new flight routes in 2023 vs 2019. 4. Most Recovered Airports: Established by airline capacity growth (%) between 2019-2023. 5. Fastest Growing Airports: The highest growth rate (%) in airline capacity change from Q4 2023 vs Q4 2022. VietJet leads the pack across three airline categories: Capacity Growth and Frequency Growth (both for short-haul LCC), and Most Improved Network. Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta is the Most Recovered airport, and Hong Kong is the Fastest Growing. The list also recognizes key route performance in the past year, including Incheon - Tokyo Narita as the Most Competitive International City Pair. “The global aviation market has fully recovered with ASPAC still lagging behind. Depending on global macroeconomics and the full recovery of the Chinese outbound market, the full recovery should occur end of 2024 or early 2025,” said Mayur Patel, head of the ASPAC Region at OAG. “With rising aircraft orders placed in the region, increasing disposable incomes, and a hunger for travel, ASPAC is poised to lead the industry in the next decade." This just in from Air New Zealand (More details in TRAVELinc Memo next week): The airline will return to Hobart and Seoul in October 2024 after both were paused over the New Zealand winter period. Both the Auckland to Hobart and Auckland to Seoul routes will be seasonal services, three direct flights a week to each destination over the summer months from October – March. The airline will also be expanding its capacity on key Asian routes, with Singapore, Tokyo, and Taipei all seeing increases in seat numbers on offer between November 2024 and March 2025 as a result of the introduction of Air New Zealand’s larger 777-300 aircraft on these routes. While Air New Zealand is returning to routes and increasing some capacity, aircraft availability limitations due to ongoing engine challenges mean it has had to extend the pause to its Chicago service which was due to resume from October 2024.

The AIRLINE industry CONSOLIDATION continues aiming sustainability. Simultaneously, COMPETITION AUTHORITIES aim to secure competitive markets/prices and good level of services. Now in the EU, both, the Spanish airline Air Europa acquisition by the IAG Group (where Iberia is a member) and Italian ITA Airways acquisition by Lufthansa Group will follow an in depth-investigation by the European Commission due to competition concerns. Lufthansa Drops Beijing Service Amid Growing Chinese Competition Lufthansa recently announced it will suspend its Frankfurt-Beijing service, starting October 26, 2024, due to increased competition from Chinese airlines. With Beijing Daxing International Airport rapidly emerging as a global hub, the competitive landscape has intensified, pressuring Lufthansa to rethink its route network. 💡 Airlines and leasing companies must stay adaptable, regularly reviewing route performance and making strategic adjustments to align with evolving market conditions. Optimizing maintenance programs and aircraft transition management is also key for ensuring operational efficiency and keeping costs under control. As an airline, how would you respond to these changes? ✈️ Stay connected by following our page for the latest updates or or say hi at [email protected] Source: Aviation Week #AviationTrends #AviationNews

Nice to see Malaysia Airlines Group (MAG) move forward with long held ambitions to launch a 2nd Europe route. The timing of Friday's announcement may seem strange given MAG just slashed capacity by 20% to ensure operational stability. However, by the time Paris is launched in late March the group should be on a more solid footing, as I explained in the Astro AWANI interview last week: “Most of the operational issues they have been facing can be resolved in the next few months as they get aircraft back into service. It should be short term ... and the airline will be on a better footing next year.” https://lnkd.in/ekG7b-8R MAG also expects to take delivery of its first 6 A330-900neos by end Mar-2024, freeing up A350 capacity for Paris. Based on current OAG schedules, MAG’s A350 fleet is now used for double daily services to Doha and London along with 2 weekly Narita flights. Doha and Narita are among the initial A330-900 routes. MAG initially planned to use its A350 fleet to launch a 2nd Europe route after London in 2018. At the time Paris was a frontrunner along with Amsterdam. Related CAPA analysis that I wrote in Jun-2017: https://lnkd.in/eCD-Z_Zd Malaysia Airlines System (MAS) dropped Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Istanbul and Paris in 2015/early 2016 as part of a major restructuring that led to the establishment of MAG, replacing MAS. The restructuring also included lease deals for 6 new A350-900s, which were delivered from Nov-2017 to Jul-2018. While MAG quickly implemented the plan to transition both London frequencies from A380s to A350s, the 2nd Europe route never materialized. MAG started relooking at a 2nd Europe route in 2022 with initially Istanbul the frontrunner. However, the launch of Doha in May-2022 was so successful it decided to add a second Doha frequency in Aug-2022 instead of moving forward with a new Europe route. MAG therefore continued to use A350s for medium haul routes (prior to COVID it was Narita, Osaka and Sydney). A 7th A350 (a used ex-SAS -900) was added in late 2023, resulting in 28 widebodies including 15 A330-300s and 6 ex-Air Berlin A330-200s (added in 2018). Prior to the restructuring MAS had 34 widebodies, including the same 15 A330-300s, 13 777-200ERs and 6 A380s (taken back by Airbus as part of the 2022 deal for 20 A330-900s). MAG’s widebody capacity was 94% recovered in Aug-2024 (vs Aug-2019), based on OAG data. But overall international seat capacity was 103% recovered last month (prior to the recent cuts), due to more 737 flights and 737 densification. MAG now has 51 737s (includes 4 MAXs) vs 48 in 2019. MAG now has 57 international destinations & 62 routes (excludes charters) vs 47 & 53 in Sep-2019. MAG has been expanding its international network over the last year, launching 13 destinations with a focus on South Asia & SE Asia. Paris will not be easy commercially as SE Asia-Europe market conditions are now normalizing. However, Paris will help feed Australia/NZ and MAG’s expanded regional network.

The flights connect the Triangle to thriving international cities, with Copa Airlines' flight from Panama City, Panama, and Lufthansa’s flight to Frankfurt, Germany. These new flights have come after RDU announced it set a new monthly record for passenger traffic in May. The airport saw 1.4 million passengers pass through its terminals, 10.5 percent above April’s traffic numbers and 9.7 percent above last May’s metrics. Vietnam Airlines, a 4-star airline and flag carrier of Vietnam, has been named among the top 10 most punctual airlines in Asia Pacific by Cirium, a leader in aviation analytics, in The On-Time Performance Review 2023. Vietnam Airline is also the only Vietnamese airline to be named in this ranking. The report, published in January 2024, is based on an extensive amount of data collected and curated from more than 600 global sources of real-time flight information including published schedules, government agencies, civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports, and major airline reservation systems. In 2023, Vietnam Airlines operated 150,674 flights with an on-time arrival percentage of 77.46% which is higher than the regional average of 73,51%. The definition of an on-time arrival is when a passenger flight arrives at the gate within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time. #vietnam #hanoi #hochiminhcity #hcmc #indochina #ontime #performance #vietnamairlines #apgnetwork #partners #airlines #aviation #travel #tourism
