We all dream of a better world, of a community where every citizen feels integrated and valued. This year's edition of the Civil Society Gala, in which I am honored to be part of the Social Impact Jury, urges us to reflect on the importance of "Communities for the Common Good", emphasizing the mobilization and involvement of citizens in projects that bring significant improvements in our lives and those around us. It is an opportunity to unite our efforts and make a difference in a world that often seems full of challenges and uncertainties. And it brings to mind spotmedia.ro, the project to which I have dedicated the past four years of my life and which has gained much more confidence as communities have been built around it: engaged readers, open partners, clients who care beyond metrics. It defends the right of each of us to accurate information, aware that this is a cornerstone of democracy and our progress as a society. And all it needs is for those involved, whether readers, companies, or agencies, to understand the crucial importance they have and to support it through concrete and responsible actions. In the end, we only need to understand that the power to change the world lies in our hands. Every gesture of involvement and support for initiatives that promote the common good is a precious stone in building a better future for all of us. 🌐💡Our journey to the #shiftthepower Summit in Bogota has been eye-opening! We engaged in a meaningful conversation with colleagues from Ukraine, Colombia, the UK, Zambia, India, Kenya, USA, Zimbabwe, Haiti and many other places; people from different backgrounds like philanthropy, the donor community and local and international or intermediary organisations. We shared our lived experiences with institutional listening practices and barriers for local agency and leadership. We also did a poll on accountability practices that revealed intriguing insights, with donors being the main target, followed by colleagues, and communities. When asked about data sources, participants emphasised on communities, financial reports, and staff; and while some reported empowering communities through their reporting practices, few had evidence of doing so. The results of this poll spark bigger questions on who holds agency in our analyses practices and the way we are valuing local knowledge in our project planning. Here are three ways establishing a sense of place can reinforce a vision of success for funders and leaders in newsrooms and help us translate it into community impact – even in turbulent times: ✅Produce and distribute more local stories about civic life, so people can better understand what’s happening in their communities and make decisions about their daily lives. ✅Invest more dollars in local news and community organizations that fill reporting gaps, expand distribution, and represent the full spectrum of identities and voices that make up our diverse communities. ✅Foster opportunities for collaboration among local leaders in our news and information network to build relationships and encourage knowledge-sharing on wins and lessons learned. That's why it's changed to a diverse funding model that includes community contributions through a shareholder campaign. While the Sentinel staff is committed to ensuring there is no charge to access their news, they need help to survive and grow. It takes just $10 to become an Aurora Sentinel community shareholder. The rate of local newspaper closures has accelerated to 2.5 a week in 2023, according to a new report from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University released earlier this month.
