It is an Indian tradition to offer "Thamboolam" (Thamboolam is a combination of betel leaves and betel nuts often given with coconut, fruits and sweets that is offered in almost every ritual) during festivals, religious functions and ceremonies, and auspicious occasions. Recently we had a family function at home and we had to offer Thamboolams to all the guests. So, I decided to do my best in reducing plastic covers and other non eco-friendly products. As you can see in the picture, instead of plastic bags eco-friendly paper bags, a reusable steel tiffin box for sweets, fresh betel nuts instead of betel nut packets, paper covers for jaggery and blouse piece instead of plastic covers, no plastic Haldi Kumkum packets instead small metal boxes (reusable) were used along with a small note which said - "Small Changes, Big Impact! Opt for Eco-friendly choices and together we can create a more sustainable world. Thank You for joining us in this Journey!!" We gave 100 such bags to our guests. If we had used plastic and non-biodegradable products, the carbon footprint would have been huge. I wouldn't say that the transition you see here is also completely sustainable. Many of these products can also be avoided and reduced. But at times the customs and traditions do not allow you to compromise. It was a difficult task for me to bring in this very very small transition at home, trying to make my family understand the importance of sustainability. These transitions might not seem to be very impactful when you see them happening but it does make a difference. As I always say Sustainability is simply transitioning back to our olden day habits and practices. In today's climate crisis, it's crucial for everyone to step up and make a difference. We need to focus on using clean energy, cutting down pollution, and protecting nature. 🌿 Green Contest : "Ought So" by ThoughtSol Infotech Pvt. Ltd 🌿 At Thoughtsol Infotech Pvt Ltd, we're participating in a contest called 'Ought so' to promote eco-friendly practices. As part of this initiative, I'd like to share my own green practices. I've been living in Delhi for the past 7 months and have made a conscious effort to avoid using plastic. However, it's not always easy to completely eliminate plastic use, so I've found creative ways to reuse it. Instead of discarding water bottles or cold drink bottles, I collect them. As you can see in the #picture below, I've started a collection of these bottles. My personal challenge is to gather 100 bottles. Once I've reached this goal, I'll plant trees in them and create various decorative crafts. Depending on the situation and timing, I plan to do this either with orphan children or with friends. Additionally, I #never throw away any carry bags I receive from the market, whether they're plastic, paper, or cloth. I collect all of them and have decided to reuse them by giving plastic bags to local vegetable sellers and cloth and paper bags to local clothing or kirana stores. It's a #small #step but meaningful step towards a greener and more sustainable future.
