"Vaseline Transition Body Lotion." Why? Are you kidding us? Perhaps the biggest exploit we've seen yet. Have you EVER seen the rivers of your company (and others) plastic filling the rivers flowing into the Gulf of Thailand? Instead, why not just cut down on the plastic in your product offerings, your personalities, and your corporate communications...? How do you think you're ***helping communities*** when most people in the world don't even understand the difference between sex and gender? Educate. Start there. Not with 600+ stores carrying a parity product that exploits 'differences' rather than alleviates pinpoints and addresses real market and cultural needs. Don't pretend you're not doing what you're doing. Don't pat yourselves on the back for supporting the '3rd sex.' Just do it 3X more powerfully, without the fanfare. What you begin with and what you carry throughout your company, brand and messaging is who you are. Speaking of petroleum and wars over resources (like attention). Let's have some real industry "transition" conversations – if you dare.

Did you know that LGBTQ+ elders are 2x more likely to live alone and 4x less likely to have children than their heterosexual, cisgender peers? This makes it more difficult to age successfully in their homes and communities. This decision made by the premier was not made based on input from sport organizations, clubs, or atheltes. This decision does not make sport a safer place for women and girls, in fact it does the opposite. Provincial Sport Organizations (PSO) in Alberta (and across Canada) already chose not to implement policies international governing bodies for their sport put into place in 2023 which serve to keep transgender women from participating in women’s events. Our membership, our boards, and our local sport governing bodies made the choice to stand with equality, we will keep making that choice. #transrightsarehumanrights

June is Pride month. Last year, two companies, Target and Budweiser faced a backlash for ‘pride-washing’ when the public perceived advertising promoting LGBTQ+ support as primarily for marketing benefits rather than genuine commitment. To avoid being seen as ‘tokenistic’ or engaging in pridewashing, companies need to adopt consistent and meaningful practices that support their LGBTQ+ community throughout the year. Training, inclusive marketing and messaging, and senior leaders sponsoring an ERG are a few examples of how organisations can communicate with sincerity.  Changing a logo, wearing an ally pin badge, or having a video call backdrop with a rainbow only signals solidarity and feels genuine when there has been previous context and support. If you want to support LGBTQ+ authentically within your organisation and haven’t done anything yet, choose another time in the year to launch and then follow this up with an update and Pride activation. Pull together advocates into a Listening Group to hear their ideas and encourage a two-pronged approach of grassroots and top down. When it comes to menopause, the LGBTQ+ still don't feel represented in media or can fall between the cracks within ERG networks, finding it hard to deal with symptoms without a peer group they can relate to. To shine the spotlight on the topic, we've partnered up with Sarah Williams who leads the Menopause Inclusion Collective and has pulled together with a team of specialists, a beautifully moving film called Rainbow Menopause. This features a few different people's stories highlighting the need for better health pathways and support in and out of the workplace. I wanted to take a moment to recap the impactful LGBTQ+ Advocacy Day that took place on April 8th, 2024, in collaboration with Equality California, where our organizations, including LGBTQ Collaborative, Rainbow Resource Center, LGBTQ Rural Resource Center, and Somos Familia Valle Central, joined forces to advocate for crucial legislative bills that directly impact our community. Here's a brief summary of the key bills we advocated for during the event: AB 518 (Wicks): Extending Paid Family Leave to Chosen Family AB 2007 (Boerner): Establishing Unicorn Homes Pilot Program AB 2258 (Zbur): Increasing Access to Preventive Care AB 2442 (Zbur): Expediting Licensure for Gender-Affirming Care Providers AB 3031 (Lee and Low): Establishing a Statewide LGBTQ+ Commission SB 729 (Menjivar): Providing Equitable Fertility Coverage SB 957 (Wiener): Enhancing SOGI Data Collection SB 959 (Menjivar): Ensuring Comprehensive Access to Information SB 990 (Padilla): LGBTQ+ Disaster Preparedness SB 1022 (Skinner): Strengthening Enforcement of Civil Rights SB 1333 (Eggman and Roth): Improving HIV Data Sharing SB 1491 (Eggman and Atkins): Promoting Equity in Higher Education Each of these bills addresses critical issues faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, ranging from healthcare access to civil rights enforcement and disaster preparedness. Our collective efforts aimed to amplify the voices of our community and drive positive change through legislative action. I want to extend my gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to making LGBTQ+ Advocacy Day a success, specifically Equality California. The theme for this year's celebration is to celebrate the power of sisterhood by uplifting incredible LGBTQIA women and non-binary people from every generation, in every field and in every country around the world. One community, so many brilliant individuals. Some of the ways to celebrate and show support for the community include... 1.)Amplify Lesbian Visibility Week content When you see great #LVW24 content, amplify it by sharing it across your social media channels 2.)Celebrate the LGBTQIA women and non-binary people who inspire YOU Throughout #LVW24, content will be highlighted celebrating incredible LGBTQIA women and non-binary activists and leaders from around the world, sharing new data about the communities’ experiences, needs and perspectives and platforming great content created by LGBTQIA women and non-binary people. 3.)Make a promise that will make a difference for LGBTQIA women and non-binary people 4.)Host a #LVW24 social event If you want to host something less formal you could have a watch party, a listen party or even a #LVW24 book club! It is with great honour that I am proud to announce that LGBTIQ+ Health Australia have established a National LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care Advocacy Network , Interim Advisory Committee. The National LGBTI Ageing and Age Care Advocacy Network will provide a national voice for the views and experiences of LGBTI older people from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, Older First Nations Mob, including those of us who are sick experiencing and living with medical conditions. The Interim Advsiory Committee members are Ricki Spencer, Aleyshia Manning, Garry White, Kedy Kristal, Chris Hunt, Pauline Crameri, Chris Howard, Jo Alley and Trish. Having a National Advisory Committee to advocate for older LGBT individuals in Australia is crucial for several reasons: Representation Older LGBT individuals have unique needs and challenges that may differ from the general population. A dedicated committee can ensure that their voices are heard and their specific issues are addressed. Advocacy The committee can advocate for policies, programs, and services that support the well-being and rights of older LGBT individuals. This can help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for this population. Research and Data The committee can also facilitate research and data collection on issues affecting older LGBT individuals. This information is valuable for understanding the needs of this population and informing relevant policies and interventions. Education and Awareness By raising awareness about the experiences and concerns of older LGBT individuals, the committee can help combat discrimination and promote understanding in the broader community. Networking and Support The committee can provide a platform for networking, collaboration, and support among organizations and individuals working with older LGBT populations. This can help coordinate efforts and resources more effectively. Overall, a National Advisory Committee for older LGBT individuals in Australia plays a vital role in promoting equality, inclusion, and well-being for this often marginalized group. #queerlyageing #ageingmatters #olderqueermoblivesmatter
