Last month, the White House announced the U.S. Ocean Justice Strategy, the first federal environmental justice effort focused on communities which rely on the ocean and Great Lakes for economic, recreational, cultural, spiritual, and food security. Many years ago when I was a 9th grader and took Earth Science my understanding of the natural world and the environment began to take shape. Ultimately I pursed that interest into a career as an environmental engineer and business owner (doing the same work). I had a graduate school professor who said to work in this field you have to understand the assimilative capacity of the natural environmental and we design system to ensure we do not exceed that capacity. At times I believe much of our society believe the natural environmental has infinite capacity to absorb the waste produces - wastewater, over fishing, excess heat, excess CO2 etc but as a scientist and engineer I believe we are beginning to see responses from that natural environment indicative of reaching capacity and possibility exceeding that capacity. The International Tribunal on the Law of the Sea (#ITLOS) has handed down a landmark advisory opinion setting out the responsibility of states to act on climate change to protect marine ecosystems. A healthy ocean can help keep our climate in balance, support economic development, and allow habitats and wildlife to thrive. Marginalized communities have, to this day, borne the brunt of environmental decision-making. From contaminated dump sites in predominantly Black communities, to uranium poisoning on Navajo land, the examples of disproportionate impacts of environmental decision-making are endless.
