The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has approved a rule to enhance the transmission of renewable energy to the electric grid, aligning with President Biden's goal of eliminating carbon emissions by 2050. This rule aims to modernize the U.S. power grid to meet increasing demand from data centers, electric vehicles, and buildings, while addressing reliability concerns as coal plants retire. The rule improves transmission planning and cost allocations to integrate renewable energy more efficiently and streamlines the construction of new transmission lines. National Grid Plc is accelerating the connection of 19 battery energy storage projects in England and Wales.to Britain's electricity transmission network, easing a logjam that's hindering the nation's transition to green energy. The battery storage projects, equating to 10 GW of generation, will be offered connection dates that on average are four years earlier than existing agreements, according to a statement by National Grid, which is part of a new approach that removes the need for non-essential engineering works prior to connecting storage. My recent work with Xendee and Mayfield Renewables afforded me an opportunity to delve into the world of microgrid feasibility studies. ⚡ Designing a microgrid involves an analysis of load profiles, generation capacities, energy storage requirements and control systems. It requires expertise in electrical engineering, energy management, and grid integration. My article - "Microgrid Feasibility Studies Define What's Possible" - looks at the value of speeding up project development while mitigating risk. Why would clean energy rely on fossil fuels? There are two key reasons. Firstly, historically, only a fifth of proposed renewable power plants are actually built. So, the high number of proposals not fully implemented reflects the uncertainty of meeting future demand. Secondly, while solar and battery technology is advancing rapidly, current battery storage capacity is insufficient to reliably depend on renewables alone. Fossil fuels must be used to fill the gaps when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. This highlights the complex challenge of transitioning to clean energy. While the U.S. is on the right track with a massive push for renewables, fossil fuels are still necessary to ensure a stable electricity grid during this transitional period. The success of this transition will depend on advances in battery storage technology and continued investment in clean energy infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/dzkvYNBg

How much does a gigawatt of new power generation cost these days? How long will it take to get once committed to procuring? Just ask Microsoft. The answer is over $1 billion per gigawatt and for 10 gigawatts generated by renewables, it will take 2-6 years. The race to procure limited and dwindling power supplies is on, and the inevitable shortages will have consequences. Have you thought about that?

Georgia Update Georgia Power seeking more energy generating capacity October 27, 2023 - ATLANTA – Georgia Power usually asks state energy regulators every three years to approve the utility’s latest plan outlining the mix of energy sources it intends to rely on for power generation during the next two decades. But what the Atlanta-based utility describes as Georgia’s “extraordinary” economic growth is prompting Georgia Power to seek additional generating capacity less than a year and a half after the state Public Service Commission (PSC) approved its last Integrated Resource Plan (IRP). The company submitted an IRP update to the PSC Friday proposing additional capacity to handle current projections reflecting energy growth of about 6,600 megawatts of electricity, up from about 400 megawatts Georgia Power forecasted in January of last year. A megawatt is enough electricity to power about 750 homes. The update calls for expanding the use of renewable energy and battery storage, both sources of power generation long supported by environmental advocates. But it also proposes the construction of new gas turbines at Georgia Power’s Plant Yates in Coweta County, to the dismay of environmentalist critics.

https://lnkd.in/gxNHFb-2 Southeast Texas is witnessing extraordinary economic and population growth, resulting in a significant rise in electricity demand. In response, Entergy Texas plans to add 40% more generation capacity to its power grid within the next four years. Currently, Texas faces several challenges with its power grid: Demand Surges: The state's rapid growth has led to unprecedented peaks in electricity demand, especially during extreme weather conditions. Grid Reliability: Events like Winter Storm Uri in 2021 exposed vulnerabilities in the grid, leading to widespread outages and highlighting the need for more resilient infrastructure. Renewable Integration: As Texas increases its reliance on renewable energy sources like wind and solar, the grid must adapt to the intermittent nature of these power sources. Aging Infrastructure: Parts of the grid infrastructure are aging and require upgrades to maintain efficiency and reliability. Regulatory and Market Challenges: The deregulated electricity market in Texas, managed by ERCOT, presents unique challenges in balancing supply and demand, particularly during peak times. As Texas continues to expand, so does our need for more dispatchable, reliable power to support businesses in Southeast Texas and across our great state. Entergy Texas is committed to addressing these challenges and ensuring a stable and robust power supply for our growing communities.

An interesting article regarding the Government's plans to raise thresholds for NSIPs across different generating stations and the potential challenges that could arise whilst seeking consent. Clean energy is clean energy, whether it is generated through solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, or other means. In the context of the consenting process, should the UK's overarching requirement to produce clean energy be the key factor when determining if a project is considered Nationally Significant, rather than the type of technology generating that power? https://lnkd.in/ecmaBMXn

Agree Paul, Mick de Brenni - now we need that technical assessment conducted on the +130,000km (+$29bn) of Qld DNSP networks, and in combination with the improved dynamic TNSP limits (all lines) will improve existing asset utilisation and defer/limit new build all leading to a reduction in costs to customers - the improved asset utilisation and deferral cost savings will be significant and must be pursued to reduce the cost of the transition, + improving embedded supply resilience (+comms), and improve customer NSP pricing. (eg when we had an Electricity Commission overview and Stanwell power station was deferred and engineering redesign cost reduction was implemented - the deferment saved Qld customers ++$m)
Last year I spent some time working through how renewable developers can get more MW for less $ out of a Renewable Energy Zone. Given the challenges and headwinds facing new developments, any successful transmission augmentations need to function at their outer operating envelope - viz. real-time transmission line ratings. So, I jumped on the tools for a while, crunched the numbers and wrote up the story with the article recently being published in the journal "Energy Economics". To summarise, a double circuit 275kV radial REZ with static line ratings of ~1500MW could host about 1700MW of wind, whereas the same 275kV assets with a bit of technology added for real-time ratings could host more than 2700MW. About 1000MW of solar PV fits neatly in-between given some level of diurnal complementarity. For those interested, you can download a copy of the published article at https://lnkd.in/gFp6gTvW

🔋 The U.S. could see an 89% increase in battery storage capacity by the end of 2024, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This could be made possible if all planned energy storage systems are commercially operational on schedule. Developers are planning to expand U.S. battery capacity to over 30 GW by the end of 2024, with around 16 GW already planned or operational as of the end of 2023. This expansion could have a significant impact on the country's energy infrastructure and help to support a more sustainable future. #energy #sustainability #battery #storage #infrastructure
