"We must champion a more entrepreneurial and risk-tolerant ethos within the nonprofit sector." - Dan Pallotta Embracing Dan’s call-to-action, we recently brought the principles of Uncharitable to San Francisco–the home of entrepreneurial and innovative minds. We hosted an event that united leaders from nonprofits, for-profits, tech, and policy. The aim was to brainstorm actionable ways to initiate solutions for the daunting challenges confronting nonprofits specifically in the Bay Area. Special thanks to: Stephen Gyllenhaal, ROCO Films, Do Good Points, and SHACK15 Participants from Tesla, Meta, VC Fund, Google, and the Uncharitable Movie Team, converged and discussed the future of philanthropy. Here are our key insights: 1️⃣ Getting on the same page: Identifying the root causes of urban and societal issues necessitates a collective effort involving all sectors. Achieving consensus on these root causes is imperative before setting attainable goals. 2️⃣ A New Framework for Coordination: Just as NASA coordinates a very complex matrix of teams toward common objectives, we will require a centralized system of communication and collaboration, potentially embodied in a single organization. 3️⃣ Grassroots Empowerment: While top-down coordination is crucial, grassroots initiatives are equally vital. Every individual has a role to play in effecting change through education, dialogue, and challenging preconceptions. Initiatives like "Uncharitable" empower individuals to advocate for social good. 4️⃣ Embracing Discomfort: Breaking out of comfort zones is essential for driving real change. Nonprofits should proactively engage with entities outside their sector, fostering partnerships for fundraising and other shared objectives 💡 Want to delve deeper into the solutions discussed? We’re excited to announce that Renaissance Philanthropy is partnering with the UK’s Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA)to grow the UK’s ecosystem of technical talent and frontier research. The Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) was launched in 2021 by the UK government to unlock scientific and technological breakthroughs that benefit everyone. Their work is deeply complementary with our mission at Renaissance Philanthropy to raise the collective ambition of scientists, innovators, and philanthropists. Here’s what we’ll be doing with them: 1/ Technical talent network: we’ll help ARIA build a network of UK-based technical talent to enhance the skills of early-career researchers and help entrepreneurial scientists launch new translational R&D organizations. 2/ Horizon Scanning Group: We’ll organize study groups of top scientists and technologists to identify new high-value opportunity spaces that ARIA and other agencies, philanthropists, and foundations can support. 3/ Accelerator for Research Programme Leaders: We’ll launch an accelerator to train incoming and potential ARPA PMs, drawing from a playbook of lessons learned from past programs at DARPA and other ARPAs. 4/ Funder Coalitions: Inspired by examples like a collaboration between multiple philanthropists and the UK Biobank, we’ll work to convene coalitions of philanthropists, foundations, and government agencies to increase the ambition of the UK’s R&D ecosystem and attract flexible and patient capital for scientists. 5/ Translation Strategies: We’ll develop coalitions of forward-looking civil society, industry, academia, government and philanthropic actors to increase the impact of ARIA’s “opportunity spaces.” This means we’re growing our team in the UK and we’re excited to share more details about the amazing individuals that will be joining our team soon - stay tuned! We are all excited to collaborate with eight other Activation Partners including Convergent Research, Amodo Design, CIC (Cambridge Innovation Center), Cambridge University Health Partners, Fifty Years, Nucleate UK, Google, Google DeepMind, and Pillar VC Together, we can help supercharge UK research and innovation. Yesterday, I spoke to a class at the University of Florida, my alma mater (Go Gators). The class is mainly focused on nonprofit fundraising and PR strategies, but it is structured to expose students to many aspects of nonprofit organizations. Of course, I had a chance to chat with them about nonprofit innovation as the former VP of Innovation for United Way and current CEO of LaunchPath! These students, who will be starting careers in the coming months, had great questions about my early nonprofit experience. The one that stuck out the most was, "How do you actually get someone to say yes when you have a big idea you want to pursue?" It's a great question and something that's on the minds of entry-level nonprofit employees and seasoned professionals alike. To me, there are three things you need: 1) A well-articulated VISION: Do the people you're pitching believe you understand the problem, its root causes, and the big-picture impact of doing nothing? Do they feel compelled to act when you share your solution? 2) The power to INFLUENCE peers and leaders: Entry-level innovators rarely get the green light through formal authority from a single decision-maker. Strong opinions from your peers can get you access to information and resources. How leaders see you affect what resources they're willing to bring to bear or whether they'll even let you play in their sandbox. You don't have to have maximum "woo", you don't even have to be liked... but your abilities and reputation should be respected. 3) Demonstrate your ability to EXECUTE: You're basically asking an under-resourced organization for permission to make a bet on yourself. For leaders to feel good about that bet, they need to know you're ready to be responsible and accountable for every aspect of the project, and that there's a chance you could achieve the positive results you're after. With a big, audacious idea, its good to communicate up front that you may not succeed. But with an instructive failure, you can still promise to deliver validated learning, new agile ways of working, and new capabilities to the organization. That way you're hedging your bets and accounting for the different types of return on investment your innovation project can produce. These ideas of vision, influence, and execution are what made the difference between giving my wild ideas the thumbs up or the thumbs down. But that's just my experience. What do you think?
